I had Hijackers on my '68 back in '71. I'm currently looking at a '69 that has Delco air shocks on the rear. Are air shocks commonly used these days? What about wheel hop?

View Full Version : Does anyone use air shocks anymore? Fred Mertz Sep 4th, 06, 07:41 PM I had Hijackers on my '68 back in '71. I'm currently looking at a '69 that has Delco air shocks on the rear. Are air shocks commonly used these days? What about wheel hop? Fred:confused: JimM Sep 4th, 06, 08:27 PM no. For the most part, the hobby has grown up a bit. Nobody uses air shocks. Nobody buys L60's and N50's and puts them on reverse offset rims that stick em 4" outside of the fenders, either. Don't think air shocks ever killed a bit of wheel hop, if anything they made it worse. ace's68 Sep 4th, 06, 09:27 PM i had air shocks under the 68 as a temp fix so i wouldnt tear apart the quarter cause i switched to 15" rims... they sucked they leaked out almost all the air in just a few hours and they are an excellent way to put holes in ur trunk pans. just get the springs rebent to get it higher. martins 68 Sep 4th, 06, 10:02 PM I put a set on last october (auto zone) as a quick fix (Id only had the car 10 days)to get the car level, but they worked out well so I just left them on.no wheel hop and they only lose about 2 pounds a month could be from checking BlackoutSteve Sep 5th, 06, 04:51 AM I use an air shock only on the right rear to preload axle torque. It is the single most effective traction improvement I have made. redvetteharley Sep 5th, 06, 07:58 AM My 69 had air shocks on it when I purchased it. They were needed to keep the fenders off of the 255 x 15 tires but have since changed to 275 40 r17 and Now they are not needed, but they worked fine for me but are not needed any more. No leaks or pressure drops. I may remove them and replace with a quality aftermarket shock. pdq67 Sep 7th, 06, 07:33 AM My car had a pair on them when I got it back that were hooked up separately so you could vary the pre-load side to side! They were old and rotten so I canned them, but I think I did pitch the bulkhead Shrader valve fittings in a box somewhere for maybe later re-use. They also had 1/8" nylon air lines on them. pdq67 77thor Sep 7th, 06, 10:41 AM You're better off replacing springs if you're sagging that much... jr68 Sep 7th, 06, 11:05 AM I just installed a pair last night ( to keep the fenders off my tires. ) The old air shocks were on the car since 1979. BonzoHansen Sep 7th, 06, 08:32 PM Lose the air shocks. The mounts are not made to carry that load. Search long enough and you wioll see pics of broken upper and lower mounts. |
