: Quarter panel stiffener?
DanBnis Jul 9th, 01, 05:02 PM There is a stiffener or brace spot welded to the quarter panel under where the corner of the trunk lid is. It is spot welded only in the area under the trunk lid and has seam sealer under the rest. It is entirely under the quarter panel and maybe 3" X 4" and formed to match the curve of the trunk lid recess. Anyone know what it is for? It is only on the drivers side. Is it necessary?

68SS396 Jul 10th, 01, 02:39 AM I put mine back as it seems to give a little support and not make it sound so tinny when tapping on the quarter. I figure car makers are cheap and have a reason for everything as they don't waste money on stuff that doesn't do anything so I put mine back. They should be on both sides. Maybe your other quarter was already replaced? A lot of shops don't seem to put these back
RickD Jul 10th, 01, 03:10 AM Rick's First Generation offers these now.

DanBnis Jul 10th, 01, 01:17 PM Maybe thats why my trunk lid always sounded junky when shut. I will check for another one at summer Carlisle. Thanks

William Jul 10th, 01, 02:54 PM They are not only on the LH side; they were originally on both. They are sometimes so poorly welded they can be pulled off with a good tug. There are also braces alonside the rear quarter glass under the panel. They are welded to the roof rail. Body shops just cut them off leaving a big gap at the corner where the glass strip mounts.
DanBnis Jul 10th, 01, 03:03 PM I found the braces at the quarter window but they are so poorly attached I could not get the quarter panel off without removing it. I intend to try to reuse it.

Gambitt Jul 10th, 01, 05:22 PM Are they reproducing all of these braces? I don't think my car has them, but I will put them back if it is important.

Austin Jul 10th, 01, 05:32 PM Reinstall any braces that you remove, they are there for a reason. The ones at the 1/4 glass will have to be installed after the 1/4 is fit, don't weld them to the body or the 1/4 before or you will have a very hard time getting the 1/4 panel in place.
Austin
DanBnis Jul 11th, 01, 02:19 PM Thanks Austin. I had the quarter panel on and everything looks good but I was going to weld it on first. Thanks for the tip.

Austin Jul 11th, 01, 07:31 PM Unfortunatly it will be a little harder to weld after the 1/4 is fit (not to bad though), but it beats having to bend the sail to fit the 1/4. I would however drill the holes for your plug welds on the 1/4 before, that way all you have to do is clamp it on and weld. Mine were brazed on to the sail, so make sure you get all the brass off or you will have a poor weld.
Austin
DanBnis Jul 13th, 01, 03:09 PM Austin, How big do you make the hole for your plug welds? I have been using 3/8 cause it is about the size of a spot weld but it seems a little big for a plug weld.

Austin Jul 15th, 01, 05:42 PM Sorry, I've been gone. Plug welds by I-CAR standards are 5/16" and thats what I use. Many people use 1/4" and they hold up fine, but I like to go with I-CAR they have done alot of collision testing.
Austin
DanBnis Jul 16th, 01, 10:42 AM Thanks, I will try 5/16.

Gambitt Dec 9th, 05, 04:50 AM Once again, thanks for the help. Does anyone know for sure if these are being reproduced? If so, has anyone purchased them? Thanks.
I just checked with Ricks and they do not have them and they don't know of anyone who makes them. Does anyone know where I could find a good used set? Thanks.
