Is there any benifit to a timming gear vs. a timming chain? If so is it a easy swap? What kind of noise?

Everett#2390 Sep 6th, 06, 07:29 AM Pro: No stretch Cons: Lots of noise Added harmonics Search Engine compartment for this subject. madmax87 Sep 6th, 06, 02:12 PM Not sure of the benefit, maybe more accurate timing, no chain stretching, but there is definitely a sound difference. The gear drive is considerable noisier. It sounds like a blower car. I like it!! NER perf Sep 6th, 06, 02:48 PM personally,i dont like gear drives.:( maybe ok for blown motors, where engine kick back due to backfire, etc, can snap a chain .:clonk: i think they tranfser too many harmonics from valvetrain to bearings. ever wonder why noone ever ran them in nascar ?for all those years they used chains ,and then went straight to belt drives. i guess if you like noise they'd be for you:) Milt's 68 SS/RS 396 Sep 6th, 06, 07:14 PM I put one on my big block and was a little startled at how noisy this set-up is, but it's starting to grow on me! camcojb Sep 6th, 06, 08:10 PM not really a performance mod, more whether you like the noise most of them make. Jody fatblock Sep 7th, 06, 07:41 PM I will take a gear drive anyday compared to dialing in a cam and guessing at the final ICL due to chain slop.My best guess at Nascar not using them. They run race motors and replace chains and belts like we change underwear.gear drives do steal some HP with the driven gear binding and do transfer harmonics, but the total timing and blueprinted ICL will stay put for many miles.Noisy and Quiet options available.Go with the quiet, the noisy is obnoxious to most fellow commuters. 1bad69+70 Sep 7th, 06, 08:21 PM i think there was a dyno comparison on this and the gear drive sucks like 7 horses more than chain.belt drive was the best. camcojb Sep 7th, 06, 08:59 PM I will take a gear drive anyday compared to dialing in a cam and guessing at the final ICL due to chain slop.My best guess at Nascar not using them. Nascar does not use gear drives. A good true roller like Cloyes has virtually no stretch, that's the way to go. Jody |
