Just got in my new door handles for the 68. I went to install them and they dont appear to fit very well. the long rod that comes out of the push button seems way too long. when I try to fit it, it pushes the latch mechanism lever all the way over and I still cant get the handle in. Am I doing something wrong?

No,you are not doing anything wrong....

The aftermarket door handles' "pegs" on the other side of the pushbutton are extra long to allow for the original latch mechanisms that might have become sloppy over the years. Shorten them 1/2 inch or so and it will be fine. Compare them to the originals,measure,and cut as needed. :thumbsup:

Ohhhh thanks! unfortunately I dont have the originals so Im kind of SOL on that one. I assume I cut it to the length so it hits the latch mechanism without actually pushing it right? Just so it touches?

Typically,they are about 1/2 too long, Cut less than that to start,since too short won't work either. Try 3/8 or so then mock it up to check for function.

What was failed to mention, however, was that if the rods are still a little too long, then you cant get your door open again. Arg.

I cut the rods a 1/2 inch, installed them and all was well. Open, close, open, close. now lets try the lock. Great! it works! but now I cant unlock. DOH!

I left the rods a little too long and it was still pushing on the mechanism just a bit. So I took the handles off again, cut them a tiny bit more, and all was well.
