: What mufflers do you have for your SBC?
Black Z Sep 10th, 06, 11:02 PM I have a 2.5" header back system now with two dynomax mufflers and I hate them. They sound terrible, like a fast thumping sound under WOT. I want something that has a nasty muscle car rumble on the outside, but not too loud on the inside. What exhaust systems do you have and/or recommend. Please list what headers, mufflers, diameter/material of tubing and where your tips exit. Please give you opinions. If you have any sound clips please provide them also. Thanks for the help
69RS406 droptop Sep 10th, 06, 11:37 PM I have the 40 series Flowmasters, 2 1/2 pipes, Hooker super comp headers and they exit out the back. It's a convertible and I think it sounds just right, of course with a 5 speed it drops the rpms so that helps with any interior resonance. I get compliments on the sound. Just depends on the sound your after.. want loud check out the super 40's, or the 3 chamber 50 series if you want it a little quieter.
madmax87 Sep 10th, 06, 11:44 PM I'm using the FLO-17139 kits on 2 of my 69 and like them alot. It's 2.5" back from the headers and exit out the back in the normal location for a 69. There a little louder but then I only have a AM radio so I'd rather hear the car. Fit and appearance are #1.

BERRY251 Sep 10th, 06, 11:57 PM Flowmaster Super 40's!!!!
Dirt Reynolds Sep 11th, 06, 12:21 AM I have a dual 3" exhaust with Flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers. It is quite loud but I get a lot of compliments on the heavy duty sound. Also helps to have a big cube high-compression small block.
DougP Sep 11th, 06, 09:58 AM Flowmaster 40's - 2 1/2 inch exhaust ---- the louder the better!!
Steve69SS396 Sep 11th, 06, 11:40 AM I'm running Flowmaster 50 series Delta Flow #943051 which is a 3 chamber 3" muffler. I'm also running Hooker Super Comp 1-3/4" headers with Torqe Tech 3" mandrel bent exhaust that exits over the rearend. The Flowmasters sound great and the car is actually pretty quiet. Thinking about changing to Dynomax bullets to pick up a little more power.

Robm Sep 11th, 06, 05:02 PM go with flows. or if you can afford it spintechs are some of the meanest sounding mufflers ive heard. i like a loud racey sounding car.
BERRY251 Sep 11th, 06, 06:21 PM what sounds better as far as a muscle car rumble spintechs or dynomax?
Black Z Sep 11th, 06, 06:34 PM I do like the sold of flowmaster but have always heard they offer less performance because they are a chambered design instead of straight through like say magnaflow?
Camaro67_rcl Sep 11th, 06, 06:48 PM I have a chambered exhaust like the 69's came with
77thor Sep 11th, 06, 07:23 PM My pipes were custom work done by Midas Muffler and
I got their Ravin mufflers... they sound alot like Flowmasters
1FASTZ Sep 11th, 06, 07:28 PM Flowmaster 50 series delta flows with 2.5" in and out. Love the deep sound.
ctrghtous Sep 11th, 06, 10:26 PM flowmaster american thunder delta flow 2.5". I love it, but you cant talk at full throttle and tough to hear at highway speeds. One of my friends told me he thought it sounded too tinny with my old engine but then he bought the flowmaster kit from Summit after waiting for a year
Lonnie67 Sep 11th, 06, 10:42 PM I have the Ultra Flow's with an X pipe. If you have them without an X they will sound like glasspacks because that is what they are. Very "poppy" and terrible like you said. You can hear my car by watching the vids in my sig.
At the 400 hp range Flowmasters won't hurt power. I switched from 40 series delta flows with an H pipe and only gained .05 at the most.
DarcyW Sep 12th, 06, 08:14 AM Thorley headers, 2.5” Magnaflow exhaust, love the sound.
377camaro Sep 12th, 06, 02:17 PM 3" dynomax bullets here. I love them to death. They're plenty loud but my motor is built and that's what I love about it. There is no signature sound as with flowmasters. It's the motor that you can hear. It's awesome. Inside the car, it's surprisingly not as loud as you would think it'd be after listening to the car on the outside. I just had them done not too long ago matter of fact, I have pics if anybody wants to see 'em. When my dad's trying to talk to me while I'm in the driver seat, I do have to kind of yell out to him just for him to hear me.
ss dave Sep 12th, 06, 02:21 PM Switched from Flow 40's to 50's. 40's were a little too loud for my taste- will make a great deal on them if interested. 50's are just right. Loud pipes save lives!
emperor91108 Sep 12th, 06, 05:24 PM Flowmaster Super 40's, 2 1/2 inch H pipes, w/ hooker comp headers
ratbikeharley Sep 12th, 06, 05:49 PM I cut off a brand new stock exhaust on my 1969 Camaro. NOW has just headers and installed Purple Hornies from Summit. Bolt directly to header flange and took about 10 minutes to install. Costs about $80 and they sound just like a muscle car should.
Sounds great at WOT and has a mean demeanor when sitting at a stoplight in town.
So far, no problem with the local police.
Just drive sensible and enjoy.
Only drawback is that if you are in real dry/dusty area, the mufflers point down and tend to stir up dust when sitting. But you have to clean the car up when you put it away anyhow, right...
redfox Sep 12th, 06, 06:32 PM I have flowmaster 30s like the sound.
hotrod_69 Sep 13th, 06, 07:23 AM Pypes Violators Brrrrrrrrraaaaaapppppppp!
redvetteharley Sep 13th, 06, 06:55 PM REDFOX I see that you like the 30 series mufflers. According to the sound clips the 30 series is what I'm looking for That clean quite sound. Is there anything that you don't like about them?
CFunK Sep 14th, 06, 10:11 AM I only have one muffler.
It's the tranverse muffler from Flowmaster. I get many compliments on how it sounds and I don't have to worry about speed bumps. :)
stills Sep 14th, 06, 10:26 AM dynomax super turbos 2 1/2 in
what a car is supposed to sound like to me.
HOGDADDY Sep 15th, 06, 03:34 AM Dynomax super turbo's with Thorley's. I never liked the flowmaster's because they sound too much like a loud slow mustang. I have heard they don't flow so great, I honestly think its the name FlowwwwwwMasterrrrrrrrr that sells them. it sounds like it should perform well but in reality don't.
Brian Lewis Sep 16th, 06, 07:17 PM I switched from Dynomax Super Turbos to Dynomax UltraFlo Stainless Steel and I LOVE the new sound! Its quiet enough at idle or cruise to have a conversation but it can definitely let everyone know what you have if you step on the gas. They flow 1000CFM each and are a straight thru design (you can see from end to end, 2.5" all the way thru)
So I've gone from Flowmaster 40s to Super Turbos to UltraFlo SS's

redfox Sep 16th, 06, 07:29 PM The flowmaster 30s are louder than the 40s but its a good loud. You might be better off with the 50s not as loud as the 30s or 40s.

Black Z Sep 16th, 06, 10:42 PM Anyone have a sound clip of the Super 40 Series? They are supposed to be as loud as the original 40 series on the outside but not as loud on the interior or the car?
69RS406 droptop Sep 17th, 06, 10:13 AM Check out the sound clips on Flowmaster's website.. flowmaster (http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/sound.html)
Black Z Sep 17th, 06, 11:12 AM I heard those clips, just wanted some others. Thanks
lowcamaro Sep 17th, 06, 10:57 PM Couple of nice passes there Lonnie
I run Hooker Supercomp 1"7/8 primary headers and a 3"1/2 exaust system with an H pipe, through Hooker delta flow mufflers, sounds like this...We did point the exaust tips toward each other a bit to try and cancel some sound.

Camaro Dave Sep 18th, 06, 10:47 PM I will be using the FlowMaster 40 series on my next project. They have a good sound to them, not too loud........just that good Muscle car sound.
Black Z Sep 19th, 06, 01:15 AM I have a set of the original 40 series now, but I think they will be to loud on the interior of the car. The super 40 series is supposed to be as loud on the outside but not as loud on the inside.
fredd7924 Sep 19th, 06, 06:47 PM i just picked up a used flowmaster 2.5" header back kit for 80 bucks, its still nice looking and clean 2
im working on a tight bugget here
69L65-4spd Sep 19th, 06, 08:09 PM I'm one of the "other" guys. Walker turbos with 2 1/4 pipes that exit behind the rear wheels. Fairly quite but that's the way I like it. Can converse with your passenger at cruising speed without shouting Jim
Brackneyc Sep 19th, 06, 08:18 PM I have some Walkers too. Not sure of the model, but I run 2.5 from the headers back. Sounds good, but a little loud at times. Easy to have a conversation though. I have good sound deadener, which may be helping.
Fast Jack Sep 24th, 06, 10:32 PM 2.5 inch 40 series delta flow Flowmasters and they are to loud for a street car! For the street go with the 50 series.

It's the Flowmaster kit with the transverse muffler.
Black Z Sep 28th, 06, 06:16 PM I ended up going with the Super 40 Series flowmasters, they sound great. Thanks for all of the replies
Camuchi Sep 29th, 06, 09:17 AM Dang Funk- got CAM?
Sounds great.

CFunK Sep 29th, 06, 11:25 PM Yeah, it has a cam, just not sure which one. ;)
Tru-Blue DZ-302 Sep 30th, 06, 09:23 PM I have flowmaster series 40 with 2 1/2 pipes with ceramic headers on my 69 Z-28. The engine is built pretty warm with the crossram cam, lots and lots of head work, and a tank of 110 octane fuel. When I go to some of the local car shows everybody wants to hear the car run!! The car looks all stock outside and inside. It is not to loud but sure thumps just fine. I have installed the 40 series on many of my customers cars without any complaints. I LIKE the way they sound and the quality is top of the line. Just my two cents worth:thumbsup: P.S. Everybody also likes the way the leaded 110 octane smells out of the tailpipe!!!
6D9 Sep 30th, 06, 10:20 PM I am currently running Delta flow 40's on my 69 and love the sound. I have also run Spintechs,Super 40's and Ultraflows. So far I like the sound and noise level of the Delta's the best. This is behind a 408 sbc with 2.5" pypes x pipe and flowmaster 2.5" tails.
Camaro67_rcl Oct 1st, 06, 03:02 PM Just made a vid of my chambered exhaust :)

That annoying announcer was too distracting to hear your motor. What did you run for e/t there? That guy was standing in the way and I couldn't see the e/t.
I've raced at Bremerton, I like it there.
Is that a small block in that Camaro?
bills68camaro Oct 6th, 06, 08:40 PM i am trying out a set of spintech's for the first time on my new combo. i heard them on a buddy's truck & i liked them. my setup is a sbc w/hooker 1-7/8" x 3-1/2" super comps to a 3-1/2" in & 3" out x-pipe to 3" spintech pro street muff's. plans are to fire it up for the first time tomorrow. maybe.
Strick Oct 6th, 06, 11:58 PM I am new to this forum, but not new to racing or classics. On my '55 (450hp - 350) I have flowmaster 40's and 3" pipe out the rear. 'Out the rear' is the key. You can have a REAL loud car on the outside, and still be livable on the inside if you run the pipes out the rear of the car. On my '55 you can't even see the pipes below the bumper, because I had the muffler shop baloney slice them at the body. The WORST interior noise is when you drop the pipes in front of the rear end. The reverberation is horrible at any speed.
