What are these push rods? They are pushrods out of a rebuilt BB396. The engine builder said they are black, have balls on ends, and are 3/8. He said they look like steel and did not look stock. I am building this engine up Edelbrock aluminum heads (they have pushrod guides) cam 552-555 lift plus lots of other stuff. Is there a way to tell if they are 4130 chromemoly or what? I would like to make sure I have good set of push rods. If I need to replace them I would like to use a lite but strong set.

If they don't have a name on them, I would be a little leary. most of the good push rods have the name on them. The ones you describe sound a lot like Trick Flow push rods but, they have their name on them. Maybe a picture ould help but, without a name on them it would still be anyones guess. I am sure like many other things many of the push rods are made at the same place and then sold to vendors who put their name on them. For peace of mind I would probably go ahead and buy a set of "known" good quality push rods and be done with it. Save the "mystery" push rods for a back yard build or something.

I would not run any pushrod on any engine with a ball end on them. Problems with ball ends are we documented. Run a solid one piece pushrod without pressed in ends. Trickflow makes a very nice one and you can purchase it in varying lengths so you get just the right geometry on your valve train. Since you are running a big block you have guideplates, so you will want a set of hardened pushrods for you motor.
