Hi, as some of you knoq i just picked up a 327 to try and restore. When i bought it, the guy said it was 20 over. but apon inspection i found it is 30 over. The guy also said it was a 4 bolt and it was a 2. So he said if i want i can return it for my $200. All of my cylinder are good expect for one. It has some rust. It isnt horrible but, im not sure if i can bore it or just hone it. I was wondering if i cant hone it, if i can do anything so i wont have to bore the whole engine? Because if i have to go 40 over then i am going to take it back because most books and people i have talked to said not to go more than 30 over.

you can safley bore a block .060 over that is if there is no core shifts. my friend has a .060 3914678# block (327) and has zero problems.

i have heard many people tell me that the cylinder walls become to thin after 30over and may overheat.

over heating really isnt a problem if u have a good water pump, radiator and fan set up. removing rust is easy as stated in another thread try putting some molases on it and let it sit. rust is pretty common and easy to remove u could hone it off and use some berrymans chem dip.

here is a good cylinder with some piston numbers, is there anyway to figure out if this is a good piston.

I was planning on keeping the pistons and just changing the rings, is this a bad idea??? thanks

what kind of heads and cam are you going to go with? u need the pistons to match the heads and the heads to match the cam. what kind of compression do u want to run? specs of the cam and heads. thoes pistons from my knowledge are universal but u would want to replace the pings and pins to be smart.

as far as heads, i was going to get a set of already restored set of heads with 1.94intake and 1.5exhaust vavles. Im not sure the came but i was wanting one to help me get to around 325hp for the engine. I was thinking of running 10.5 to 1 or 10 to 1 cr, these will alow me to run pump gas right?? I was planning on keeping the pistons if i can and just replacing the rings and the pins, or should i replace other items also?

Looks like a Speedpro or old TRW piston number.Flat top with 4 valve reliefs. With 64cc heads you would have around 9 to 1 comp.Take some sand paper and sand the rust to see if the cylinder is pitted or its just surface rust.If its pitted to do a proper rebuild it would need to be bored. The 327 in my 67 is .060 over.

with if youre aming for 10.5 compression ur gonna have to run higher octane gas. but anything under 10.25:1 ur gonna be okay pump gas. and the rust to me on the cylinder wall also looks like surface rust to me. i would look into some flat top keith blacks or hyperutic alumnium (prob spelled wrong) there good pistons for the price.

flat tops with 64cc should give you close to 10:1 on a 327.

That rust looks deep to me. like was said, wipe it off with some sandpaper and see how bad the pits are.

is there anything i can do to fill the pits or do i have to bore out the engine if it is too deep?

you can't fill em, no.

Bore it, or hone it as best you can, use a plain iron ring set, and hope for the best.
