: Power steering pump shaft slides out

I can grab the pulley on my power steering pump, and the shaft slides most/all the way out. The belt pulls it back in and keeps it from coming off. What happened? Can I repair/rebuild it with a kit? What holds the shaft on?

I just finished putting my brackets on for my power steering pump (March serpentine conversion), and it was off just a hair (cocked to one side, but it was the best I could do). After I drove it a few miles, the power steering cut out. I thought for sure it had thrown a belt. When I looked, the belt on the pump pulley was off one groove. Evidently the pump was still turning, but the shaft is no longer spinning the pump(?). Thanks for any info.

There is a special "C" lock clip on the other end. You would need a rebuild kit, not just a seal kit to fix it. There may be some other damage inside due to the clip coming off. I don't recall if a rebuild kit comes with a new shaft, but it does include new pump ring, hub and vanes.

You could also have broken the pump driveshaft where the c-clip installs in a groove on the shaft. You might as well remove the belt and pull the driveshaft and pulley all the out of the pump. You should be able to tell if the shaft is broken at the clip groove or not. If the shaft is broken, you need a new pump. If it is just the clip, you might be able to save the pump.

Leaking PS pump. Began 3+ months ago with a knocking sound which turned out to be a loose pulley. Tightened to shaft (1/2 turn) and knocking sound, and slight wobble gone. But now it looks like I've got a seal leak somewhere, probably at bolt mounting site(s) not fittings that I can see. Pressure line and return all look good. By the way shortly after PSP was installed my tech failed to strap pressure line and header burned and popped line sprayed all over; drove onto rollaway with pump almost empty could this have stressed seals?

Just a very short drive probably wouldn't hurt the pump. However, high engine revs even for a short time could have quickly cooked the driveshaft bearing and seal. Those internal pump parts need lubrication to survive.

OK thanks, Jim, sounds reasonable. New unit from Paddock is A1 Cardone rebuilt unit. They've got a "limited lifetime warranty". Let's see how successful 'driver' useage will be with longevity. ***"Is it finished yet?"

Thanks for the replies. So how tough is it to replace the power steering pump without the reservoir? I like the old-style reservoir that I've got (with the location of the return tube). Does it need or come with a seal between the pump and the reservoir? Or am I better off just getting the whole thing (pump with reservoir)? Thanks.

When you get a rebuilt pump it doesn't come with the reservoir , so you use your old one and thats what you want .

You also usually have to transfer your pressure outlet fitting, and internal flow valve and spring.

Looking at Napa, Checker, Autozone, all three have the choice of with reservoir or without (just the pump). I looked at one at checker and it was the tear-dropped shape instead of the round shape with long skinny filler neck.

Just get the pump and transfer your housing to it .
