View Full Version : i need a little info PROJECT X 57 CHEV Lieutenant Longarm Sep 16th, 06, 06:06 PM does any one know ware to find some articals on popular hotroddings project X 57 chevy, the original one form the movie hollywood knights. ive searched and could not come up with anything Hank Williams Jr. Sep 16th, 06, 06:23 PM I'd edit this thread so the title contains: "project X" or "PHR car Project X" Hank Williams Jr. Sep 16th, 06, 06:25 PM http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080881/ a little info there. 292 Blown SBC . Maybe you make that out of a 283? Not sure. JimM Sep 16th, 06, 06:36 PM a 292 is indeed a .030" over 283. Have you searched the archives at, is it still peterson publishing or is it PriMedia now? See, I can be nice :hurray: :waving:  ;) Gary L Sep 16th, 06, 07:09 PM a 292 is indeed a .030" over 283. Have you searched the archives at, is it still peterson publishing or is it PriMedia now? See, I can be nice :hurray: :waving:  ;) Isn't a 292 a big Chevy I6? :clonk: Lieutenant Longarm Sep 16th, 06, 07:16 PM i beleve it had a bevy of motors. it first started out in the mid 60s as ther project car. its had all kinds of small and big blocks 69-Z11Pacer Sep 16th, 06, 08:15 PM Does anyone have a picture of it? I think I know where it is. J Meadows Sep 16th, 06, 09:10 PM I found this doing a search for, Project X. http://www.popularhotrodding.com/features/0404phr_1957_chevy_project_x_car/ I remember reading all of those articles back in the late 60's that I could find on Project X, had a buddy that owned a 57 Chevy and we put a 350hp 396 in it. At that time they put a 396 into Project X. I think that I might have some old articles on it, because I could never throw away any hot rod magazines. 69-Z11Pacer Sep 16th, 06, 09:28 PM If it's the same car, it's in New Jersey. Was it built in the late 90's? Hank Williams Jr. Sep 16th, 06, 10:08 PM - I agree on it having several motors - I think they kept it as an on-going project for quite a while. Kinda Like CC's "cheap street chevelle' - (it wasnt so cheap in the end) I wonder though, if it had a 283 in it for the Knights shoot, because it seemed to really launch. It was built way before the 90's. On the topic of magazine project cars, and CC - remember CC had that famous car stolen from them - I cant remember what it was called - it was some full size chev...it never did turn up I dont think.. JimM Sep 16th, 06, 10:37 PM project X was an ongoing PHR project car from the 70's thru the 90's, they just kept doing different things to it. I remember it best in yellow with a blown small block Lieutenant Longarm Sep 17th, 06, 12:10 AM - I agree on it having several motors - I think they kept it as an on-going project for quite a while. And a .060" over 283" is a 292". .030" over is the 287" jobber. An 1/8th over is the great old 301"er!! pdq67 Lieutenant Longarm Sep 17th, 06, 09:53 AM That was Project "Heavy Metal" with the 496 in it that got stolen if not mistaken! PDQ comes though again. can u take a 283 .125" over, thats seams like a ton Hank Williams Jr. Sep 17th, 06, 10:49 AM I have always had a soft spot for the 283. I'd do one. Not sure what I'd put it in - Oh yes, Heavy Metal! That car was VERY distinctive + well known, amazing it never turned up. Maybe chopped apart? Okay. But does anyone know why it was named Project "X" - was their some specific reason behind that? Like 'crusher camaro' saved from the crusher I recall. pdq67 Sep 17th, 06, 11:35 AM Sure, both the older blocks and the newer 283 blocks will generally go an 1/8" over. BUT some in the middle won't!! The newer "round-bottomed" 283 blocks are actually 302/327 blocks so will generally go to .155" over!! By round-bottom, I mean down at the bottoms of each cylinder bore, if it is dished/rounded, it is clearanced for the bigger counterweighted 327 crank and if it is flat, it is just for a smaller 283 crank. pdq67 bmaudlin Sep 17th, 06, 11:39 AM It seems not too long ago I either read in Hot Rod or saw it on "Hot Rod TV" that the magazine still has the Project X car, and may be doing some updates in the future, which I believe was the original intention when it began years ago. (But then again I may have had a dream about all of this and I'm convinced it's real!!) camcojb Sep 17th, 06, 12:03 PM I saw it at SEMA in 2004, so I'm sure they still have it. Jody ChevyThunder Sep 17th, 06, 12:05 PM I love that car ! They actually blew the motor up in the scene when Tony Danza is racing the "Chinese Bandits" in the 427 Cobra... I love Danza's budies line after Danzs gets smoked by the Cobra when he says .. " hey , you got second place " as a joke... anyone who has not seen that movie should check it out. Hank Williams Jr. Sep 17th, 06, 01:29 PM That movie has some great cars. The GTO is pretty nice, I even Like Newbomb's brothers el cam (which would have been brand new at the time I guess) can you place this quote from the movie? "That pussy is looking for ME?!" The GTO is pretty nice, I even Like Newbomb's brothers el cam (which would have been brand new at the time I guess) can you place this quote from the movie? "That pussy is looking for ME?!" Yes. That is when Newboms older brother is looking for him and his El Camino. They were in Tubby's parking lot and Newbom was hiding under "The Pie Wagon" his sedan delivery. What do I win???? Nick Lieutenant Longarm Sep 17th, 06, 04:58 PM Yes. That is when Newboms older brother is looking for him and his El Camino. Nick you woulda won a yellow 69 Z but you already have one. sooo theres not point in giving it to ya. sorry thedugan Sep 17th, 06, 06:23 PM I think this car had everything in it. Including a straight axle in the front at one time. Just like the old days. They dont really give up too many details. If this was 2003 - I wonder if there have been any other developments. Ed Kimball Mar 27th, 07, 10:42 AM Hey guys, I am the web producer for PHR, we are working on getting an archive together for Project X in the near future if all goes as planned. The car i believe is parked at primedia's tech center in orange county CA. Keep an eye on the website for the Project x archive. Thanks, Ed Kimball camcojb Mar 27th, 07, 12:17 PM Hey guys, I am the web producer for PHR, we are working on getting an archive together for Project X in the near future if all goes as planned. Jody Cal69 Mar 27th, 07, 01:26 PM Last months' Hot Rod had it as one of their "icons" for the '57 Chevy. They also featured '32 Fords and '67 Camaros. PROZ11 Mar 27th, 07, 02:10 PM I always loved that car from seeing it in the movie and in the magazine. I liked it so much that I built my own version of it back in the late 80's/early 90's. Here's a picture of mine. http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/2186/57jpgzh0gq2.jpg (http://imageshack.us) I drove it like this for about 9 years. As you can see, I didn't go with yellow. I was going to paint it yellow, but I ended up repainting the original two tone colors that were on the car when I bought it as an I6 3 on the tree. I put a blown 468, a Super T-10 4 speed and a narrowed nine inch. I did drive it without a hood for about a year until I painted it. The I cut the hood ad put it back on. The car was a blast to drive. I really miss that car. But I'll get over it very soon when my Camaro it finally done. It's been 7 long years. I feel like the guy with the "rail job." lol. Lot's of people have heard about it, but not seen it on the road...yet. Soon, very soon. novaderrik Mar 27th, 07, 05:47 PM wasn't it called "Project X" because they were going to eXperiment with whatever new free parts they could get for it? it's been reincarnated as pretty much every new trend for almost 40 years now- altho i don't know if they untubbed it and got rid oft he blown big block for the "G machine" trend... as for Project Heavy Metal- i loved the buildup of that car. it looked badass painted up like an M1 Abrams tank before they put the fugly early 90's bling paint on it. that car has been stuck in my head for over 15 years now. that car was "pro touring" before there was "pro touring". HOGDADDY Mar 27th, 07, 07:38 PM I got that magazine somewhere I remember reading it years ago will have look it up. If I remeber correctly it was black w/ red interior??. idoxlr8 Mar 29th, 07, 06:24 PM I just pulled the copy of PHR from way back and it was running a 355 with a BDS 671 and a T-400 with a 9" on stock leafs with relocated shocks and ladder bars with spring sliders. Tony Nancy redid the interior and was also in the HK movie playing himself. griffi Mar 30th, 07, 05:21 AM Isn't a 292 a big Chevy I6? :clonk: You are both correct. The in-line 6 was a truck motor that came out in the late 60's I believe. It was distinctive in appearance from the 235 in line 6. You couldn't fool tech if you were raceing them. Wow............ I'm giving away my age. |
