I have a '68 427 that I bought pretty much as it stands now. I completely rewired it (AA classic update) , upgraded the alternator, replaced the carpets, etc. my self.

I've done fairly elaborate 4x4 suspension mod's & repairs, brakes, etc in the past & have the basic tools & mech ability.

I now want more power from my 427/390. Take a look at the thread http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=90179&referrerid=26302

The question is, do I take on the job my self this winter, or pay a engine guy & know it's right. It's not really about saving money (although that's good too), but gaining a further "ownership" of the car.

I've already researched, learned & spec'd what I want to:

Replace Cam, timing chain, rockers, heads, intake. Hopefuly leave the bottom end alone. Can the cam be swapped in the car? (looks like with the radiator/grill out it woul make it fine)

Should I do it, or hand it off? Anybody in NW CT willing to help if I get over my head?

Imho, at about your motor's 10 to 1 C R. (IF it is still that??), a modern cam should really wake it up!

That and a good set of 1.75" dia., 4-tube, long headers and a free-flowing exhaust system under it.

Please go over to Big Brother's site, (Team Chevelle), and look at the UDHarold cams and also the Lunati VooDoo cams that Harold did to see what the guys like in their mild BB's like yours...

I'm thinking VooDoo 268??

PS., and headers on a BB motor are worth a bunch of power b/c of our fairly poor cast-iron exhaust manifolds!!!

You can do it ...

I wold get a friend that knows this stuff to maybe look over... just to be safe.

I was talked into doing a rebuild on the rear in my car when I was going to "farm it out". I was given on-line help only and all is great. I was in your shoes as was everyone else here at one time.

do it.... even the simple things make me feel good because I did them myself.
If you have the means to do the engine, then put in the time.

im pulling mine apart to rebuild myself after letting a "pro" do it the first time... 2K miles ago... its not as scary as i thought it would be.. do it yourself. :)

If youve got the time.. do it.. what could be more satisfying than knowing that the work was complete all by you.. not by some guy that you paid to have it done..
