View Full Version : early 80s hot rod trends
Lieutenant Longarm Sep 17th, 06, 05:04 PM hey fellas. im lookin to turn my 78 malibu in to a early 80s street machine. i have a full aray of sun gauges, ill keep my interiour stock with some racing buckets. but what i need to know as i wasnt even around when this stuff was out, is how to dress up my motor. i was thinkng gold moroso valve covers, gold hardware, white headers, gold timing chain cover. i was thinkin a velocity stack but 1 would look goffy. so what sould i do for an air cleaner system. i think a gold moroso air cleaner would be a little to much, but dont know what else to go with. this is what my motor looks like now. also what kinda wheels. slot mags. cragers where quite populare but im not a fan of SS maybe SST. and what about hood treatment. scoop, cowel, flat??

Hank Williams Jr. Sep 17th, 06, 06:07 PM Well. I know you already got rid of that accel piece of junk on yer distributer. Id use just a plain black cap for the distributer + yellow wires.
Those two lines running off the fender to the carb should be a nice braided set-up.
So early 80's to me would look like this.
gold moroso valve covers. white headers. the braided lines to carb. gold moroso 11 inch air cleaner.
Post a couple other pics of yer car - so we can ideas on the entire 80's theme.
thedugan Sep 17th, 06, 06:29 PM m/t valve covers.
mini edelbrock air cleaner
a preadator carb (that toilet bowl thing)
white blackjack (i think that was them) headers
turbo muffler
and why may I ask are you doing an 80's theme?

my car suits it. plus i love the early 80s look. im not a huge fan of the MT valve covers. im thinking i may go with a gold 11" moroso aircleaner. do they still make preadator carbs?? those where junk. also the tall tires, and white headers is realy what i like. also im not a fan of todays trends. big wheels, lowerd, aluminum everthing.
zuma Sep 17th, 06, 09:13 PM Here is a picture of my 67 camaros' 327 in 1977. I was 17 or 18 at the time. M/T valve covers, eldebrock manifold (streemaster I think), holley carb, doug thorey headers, with a black wrinkle finish in the engine bay...Oh yeah toppped with a cal custom chrome air cleaner... cool for 1977...

67pat Sep 17th, 06, 09:19 PM Crager wheels were really popular,in 78 you still saw chrome reverse wheels some, but the early 80's,at least in my area were dominated by centerlines...all chrome,no holes, with octagonal headed bolts...the look great especially on a 1st gen camaro!

those are cragar SST. i think slot mags would look the toughest on it

yeah, i plan to do steel braded anyways.
Stewart G. Griffin Sep 23rd, 06, 07:06 PM 1)They sell injector-looking setups (8) that fit over the carb. I will provide the link as soon as i can find it.
2) Not to criticize because it seem like you know more about cars than me, but the open air cleaner is not a good idea because of all the hot air under the hood.
Instead, try this:

3) Could you tell me the exact size tires and exact size wheels AND EXACT BACKSPACING of the ralleys that are on the car?
Personally, i would stick with the ralleys even though they are not really 80's.
