What is the best way to determine if a '69 Camaro was an original L78 396/375 HP car? I've heard that the tach should have a 6000 rpm redline and there should only be a single 3/8" fuel line feeding the fuel pump. Is there anything else that I should look for that differentiates it from a "standard" SS396? It has X22 on the trim tag which at least shows it's an original SS396. There is no build sheet or protecto plate.

The # match engine suffix code?

Unfortunately it doesn't have the original engine but it does have a CE replacement 375HP engine with correct block (4 bolt), heads, forged crank, rods, etc. All the casting numbers seem to add up OK (1970 vintage). It also has an M22 (1971 vintage).

I'm wondering what else to look for on the car (if anything) that determines if it was an L78 car originally.

A body or chassis broadcast sheet, window label, shippers' copy, invoice or protect-o-plate is the only way to determine a cars' true pedigree.

Any part or feature can and has been added to Camaros not originally so equipped.

How about deep groove pulleys ???? Distributor ???? rear gears ???? Just a few items, that of course could have been easily changed.

What rear gears were available for the L78? Were only certain ratios able to be ordered with the high horsepower engine?

It sounds like there is nothing that stands out on the car itself that easily discerns it as a 375 horse car, such as the trim tag (which doesn't contain that info), that can't be changed to make it an L78, is that right? Were the clips that hold the single fuel line the same as the ones that held the dual line, but the return line just wasn't installed?

Yes on the clip. Same as on my Z/28. The concensus from other posts is that rear end ratio is inconclusive, except maybe for a COPO. It would need to be X22 or X66 to indicate a BB engine if it has a 12B build date or later and is A Norwood car. Not HP though.

A single fuel line isnt a very good indicator. 6cyls and 307s had a single line also.

Does it have a Big Block crossmember and shifter? This could indicate it was at least a Big Block and SS.
