I have stored a 1970 Daytona Yellow Z-28 since 1971 the car has 326 real miles on it-can anyone tell me where to look to find how many of these cars were build with th TH 400 trans. I contacted GM but no help.

You might want to post your question on the 2nd gen site www.nastyz28.com I don't think the number was tracked and didn't see anything on their 1970 info page... www.nastyz28.com/index.php?page=1970camaro#70-z28

There's no concrete #, but the way this works:

8700 total Z28's made.

About 60% of all camaros got Automatic transmissions.

So, 60% of the Z's probably got automatics as well, or about 4800.

The base transmission in a 1970Z is a M21 4 speed, with the M22 being optional. The TH400 is the only optional automatic for a Z28.

I often use percentages too but I think this is where one of the arguments I hear a lot against using percentages may come to play. In the day automatics were not thought of as transmissions for corner carvers and the 4 speed stick shift was still perfered over the automatic at the drag strip. That carried over to the street and I think more folks buying the Z would have chosen the stick. Even the fact that the stick was the base trans in this model lends itself to more being bought with a stick, it was an additional $200 for the auto. With 112,xxx non SS or Z28 v8's I bet the percentages lean toward more of them being autos... More the mom and pop grocery getter cars if you will, you get the looks but don't need the power and performance.

Rich Pern just bought a '70 Z/28 with an automatic. He seems to know alot about this model. Maybe he would have an answer.
