: Paint removal - Wire brush?

I was just experimenting using a wire brush wheel in my 4" angle grinder. It seemed to take the paint off fairly well and faster than when I used a DA sander. Does anybody see a problem with this? Before I continue I thought I would ask for advice.

Thanks

Bob

I often use a wire cup brush on my 4" grinder for frames, etc. For sheet metal, be careful about heat buildup which can warp the panel. I bought a cowl hood that had been stipped using a DA and it had some wapage to correct.

Hey Bob,
I'd like to try the same thing with my 4" grinder. Where did you get the wire brush that fits your grinder? I've got a Makita. I've never seen brushes for them.
Thanks!

Makita has a full line of wire wheels and wire cups for all their models of angle grinders. Some hardware store have them, but most big industrial tool supply houses should carry the full line. Be careful on which shaft thread you need. There are two shaft thread patterns that they offer wheels for. One fine, and one coarse thread depending on the model.

Thanks for the info...

I picked up the wire brush at Harbor Freight for about $3. Most HD's have them but they want $10-13. For $3..I'll Give it a try.

Good Luck

Right after this thread was started, that's the first place I looked too Bob! http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif Can't beat their prices. I think that's where I'm getting a welder also.

I stripped my 69' to bare metal, trying the sander and wire brushes first, I basically got nowhere, fast. Then I discovered aircraft stripper, I'm telling you it's the next best thing to sliced bread!!!! Give it a shot, you won't regret it! After the first couple layers of paint are scraped off, I used a DA sander to finish the job, much, much easier. You can get it at just about any hardware store, around here it's called BIX, just make sure and do it in a well ventilated area, and use gloves! KZ

That's the way I have to go also John. A couple small areas have so many layers of paint/primer that I have no choice but to chemical strip a few before sanding the rest. The way I stripped the doors was to coat them real good with Aircraft Stripper, then put them in large leaf bags and tied it closed. It worked WAY better than just the stripper alone.

I tried BIX and it didnt seem to work all that well. Works wonders on hardwood floors though. Da sander and wire wheel worked well. I have alot to remove... www.ipservices.com/camaro (http://www.ipservices.com/camaro)
