: Aftermarket Yenko hood does not fit

This post is meant mostly as a warning. I purchased a Yenko hood from Rick's a year ago and finally put it on my '67 last week. This is also the one sold by Classic Industries. It does not even come close to fitting right. I made sure to line up all the body lines (center ridge, etc) and the hood is very crooked. There is probably about a 3/4 inch gap between the fender and the hood on the passenger side. The front of the hood sticks above the front body panel on the sides but below in the middle. There is also about a half inch gap in the front and the rear. My only explanation for this would be that the hood was made in a bad mold. I'm very disappointed, because I REALLY like the shape of the hood.

Also, does anyone know of a place to get a Yenko hood that actually fits?

Thanks for listening,
Ryan

I am looking into getting a fiberglass Yenko style hood and have found one at www.vfnfiberglass.com (http://www.vfnfiberglass.com) I have heard that this company is fairly reputable.

I just received the stinger hood from VFN. I will say I am very impressed with the overall quality. Very straight and nice edges. They hand make them upon order, so expect about 5~6 weeks delivery. I can't tell how it will fit though, because I haven't assembled the front clip yet and probably won't for a couple more months.

Thanks for the heads up Ryan. I love that hood too, and it's really disappointing to hear that it fits so badly. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Yenko hood you got isn't the Stinger style, but instead it has two wide openings at the front of the hood, sorta like what they used on the old 442's, right? Do you have any pics of it on your car?

I think the key is to not buy your hood until you are ready to put it on. That way you can trial fit it and send it back once you figure out what a piece of junk it is.

I had the same thing happen to me. I bought an L-88 hood from Motion Performance about 6 months before I put the front end back on the car. The hood looked great off the car, but had a major warp that was much more noticeable when the hood was installed on the car. Six months is just too long to try and get your money back.

Lesson: it may LOOK good but that doesn't mean it will FIT good.

The hood you got may very well be molded from an original hood, or from the original molds, as the original fiberglass hoods are known for there poor fit.

On the Yenko and Motion cars that I have seen, they don't seem to fit quite right. Granted, some seem to fit a little better than others, but the originals are notorious for being warped and very rough.

FYI - The 1967 Yenkos (http://www.yenko.net/reunion/yenkojp.jpg) used the "Stinger" hood, similar to the Corvettes, while the 1968 Yenkos (http://www.yenko.net/reunion/yenkobt.jpg) used a ram air looking hood, with the dual openings (like you described).

I talked to a guy with a very nice Cuda AAR. He showed me what they call a "factory hump" on the Mopars. Hood was even with fender on left side, and stuck up at least an inch on the right side. He told me that's one way to tell the replacement hoods...they're too good!Must have been a common problem. Check with Brian Henderson, here, or on Yenkos.net He will be able to tell you how well the originals fit.

Chevy454,

I spoke with Joel Rosen when I ordered the hood and he said they were still using the original mold. I had asked him how the hoods compared to the originals.

I just can't see spending $5,000 to $10,000 on a paint job and then putting a hood that does not fit on your car. I am hoping to find a fiberglass wiz that can make the hood look good enough for me.

P.S., you can go to my website to see how the hood fit on my car. It wasn't pretty.
