View Full Version : Was this a real 68' Z
Fuzzyhall Sep 30th, 06, 12:55 PM Hey guys I came acorss this 68' for a fair price. The owner was completely honest with the description on the car. He said it has a 350-4speed and obviously not the origional drivetrain if it was a Z. He was told it was a Z..but does not know for sure. It has power disc brakes, M-21, 10 bolt posi and a 5500 redline tach. How can you tell if it is a real Z?
here is the VIN: 124378N362528
I know this isnt saying much but here is a picture of the tag and the car...
What is something like this worth?
Thanks guys...Have a great day
BelAirBob Sep 30th, 06, 01:04 PM Tough to tell for sure on a 68' without the docs or the matching numbers "MO" coded block. Car should have a 12 bolt rear axle, multi leaf springs, front disc brakes, single 3/8 fuel line and 4-speed. Also, check to see if the tire inflation decal is still on the inner glovebox lid. If so,it should indicate tire pressures for 15 inch rims, which came on the Z cars. Check the rear axle code dates. If they match the build date of the car on the cowl tag, then chances are its not a Z,but a clone.

sleepsinshed Sep 30th, 06, 02:30 PM Aren't those 67 dash gauges?
Fuzzyhall Sep 30th, 06, 03:41 PM Im not sure about the guages....
What is a car in this condition worth>? He is asking $16K but seems very flexible....
Thanks guys

Kevin. Yes! Didn't catch that before. Where's my head lately??? (Don't answer that!!)
Justin, from the pictures it looks like a nice car so 16k would be a good price. However, as always, INSPECT, INSPECT, INSPECT!! The paint looks new and new paint has a way of hiding major problems.

firstgenaddict Oct 1st, 06, 07:27 AM Check to see if the rear springs are 4 leaf's (most z's had 4 leafs and only a few other cars with certain added weights had them)
Check for the muncie speedometer location, check the radiator and see what the code on the tag is, and then check the tire pressure label in the glove compartment... Report your findings back here...
gro51 Oct 1st, 06, 09:08 AM Even if not a real Z, IMO $16k and flexible isn't bad for that car if it's in as good condition as it looks from the pics.
Fuzzyhall Oct 1st, 06, 09:18 AM Thanks for the input guys. I just emailed him, his shop is not open until Tuesday so it may be a couple days.
16K seems very fair to me. My questions is, if it was a real Z and does not have the matching drivetrain...what is it worth compared to a base camaro?
Is a real Z with non-matching parts = to the value of a base camaro in the same condition?
Thanks guys...Keep the input flowing :)
al8apexer Oct 1st, 06, 09:34 AM those are not multileaf spring shock mounts
assume the car is a plain jane coupe, go from there
not much pointing toward it being a Z when it was born

A real Z/28 with non-matching parts is always worth more than an equivalent base car. Real being the operative word. You would need documents to prove real in this case. Good luck and have fun.
68 Ragtop Oct 1st, 06, 10:06 AM The rear springs are not first gen springs, so no need to count leafs.
Nothing I see points to real Z, everything mentioned previously points to a car that has pieced together.
The 10 bolt rear with mono leaf shock plates is probably the best clue. As BelAirBob said, check the casting dates and codes to match the trim tag to show it is not a Z.
If you still like the car as a plain jane with performance upgrades, you may be able to show the seller how there is no way it was a Z and get some room to negotiate the price in your favor.
deejaygee Oct 1st, 06, 02:23 PM Check the tire pressure sticker on the inside of the glove box door. If it looks original and reads 15" tires, Bingo! Otherwise, not much except a 4-speed and lack of air conditioning to point to a Z28.
soupy Oct 1st, 06, 07:38 PM This car is about 10 minutes from my house and the seller is an honest guy . If he has something for sale and knows its not the real deal he will tell you. He told me about the car about a month ago and said from what he was told it was a real z but he had no proof . If you would like me to go look at the car i'd be more than happy to go take some pics for you . Give me a call at 724-216-5845 and let me know . Good luck !

Soupy, I appreciate the help. That is a very nice offer. Im going to see what my class schedule is (Penn State Beaver). I think I am about 1.5 hours away?
Thanks again, that is very nice of you. I will let you know if I need help!

68 Ragtop Oct 2nd, 06, 05:36 PM I just realized this car is being sold by a "purveyor of antique, classic and special interest autos", AKA a dealer, not just some "guy"

I find it highly unlikely that an experienced dealer would let a real Z go for this cheap. It's not that I don't trust dealers, but they rarely undersell cars.
And although the trim tag paint code is Seafrost Green, the car is not.

I think soupy nailed it, the guy seems VERY honest. I talked to him for over 20 minutes over the phone. Sure he is a dealer and trying to make a sale; but you could tell he didnt NEED to make the sale.
He said he wasnt doing it for the cash, he is retired and does it for a hobby.
There are some honest people in this world.....
