I have a 69 RS Z28 manufactured in Oct. 1968. Did all early Z's come with chambered exhaust or is there anyway to tell if it had the chambered exhaust originally? I do have the original invoice but don't know if it would have been listed. Does anyone know?

Oct. '68 should have chambered exhaust. Sometime around beginning of Nov. chambered went optional. Discontinued around begining of May'69. there are several posts with maybe more info stored away in the archive available by searching.

Your car would have had a chambered system factory installed. Cars built after Nov 25th received the transverse muffler system standard. The change was introduced due to some municipalities banning the system due to noise. The chambered exhaust option was not available in those banned area.

As Gary L stated chambered was standard for a while and does not appear on original docs for those cars.

The driver side tailpipe hanger was different for chambered exhaust. (located in the rear wheelwell) It looked like a mirror image of the pass side hanger except the bracket was extended about 1-1/2" or so. Very hard to find an original one, but they are repopped. I made one by buying the standard one from the local parts store, and welding on an extension. After some grinding, filing and sanding, it "looks" original.

I have since aquired what I think may be an NOS one. Can anyone tell me how to tell for sure if it's NOS? It has a "W" stamped on it, which someone told me was for Walker, and therefore might be NOS.

Yes all Z28,L78 and L34 came standard with chambered exhaust until Nov 25th of 68. Then chambered became an option on cars that were to be delivered in area that did not ban the system. In May of 69 it was deleted as an available option.
