View Full Version : PCV Valve

I just bought some Moroso valve covers. They both have one hole per valve cover. I didn't notice the old valve covers that were on my motor had 2 holes on one valve cover and 1 hole on the other. So that's a total of 3 holes b/w the 2 valve covers. 2 of the holes have PCV valves in them and the other the oil cap breather. My question is does 2 PCV valves help any or did they put the extra PCV valve to plug up the extra hole in the valve cover? B/C my new valve covers only have 2 holes total one for the oil and one for the pcv valve, that's how I see it one most motors.

Blow-by gases circulate from one side of the engine to the other (passenger's side to driver's side) with the crank acting as a fan. Fresh air needs to be pulled from passenger's side valve cover then the blow-by gases exit the engine from the other valve cover. These blow-by gases are nasty (acids, water, resins, etc) and will foul the oil as well as lead to sludge and gunch in the enginein not allowed to vent. Ventalation is also important to prevent crank-case pressures from causing oil leaks.

Being a valve, the PCV will only allow flow in one direction, so having one on each valve cover defeats the purpose. Yes, it's always installed on the driver's side valve cover. So install a breather on the other side or better yet, install the correct plumbing to the air cleaner.

Good luck!

Sorry for the ignorance, but what do you mean by the correct plumbing to the air cleaner?

PCV is a closed system so there should be a hose connected to a small filter or screen that is mounted inside the engine air filter. Some people put a air breather cap on the valve cover but the air breather cap may result in fumes coming inside the car.

Add a breather to the passenger side breather hole so it can pull in clean air into the crank case. The factory used the air cleaner element as the breather by running a tube from the passenger breather hole to the base of the air cleaner assembly.

On the driver side you put the pcv valve and connect the hose to the base of the carb so vacuum can pull the air through the breather on the passenger side, through the crankcase and through the pcv valve and onto the intake so the bad gasses that form in the crankcase can be burnt off...

The only reason for a 3rd hole is for an oil filler cap but you can always just pull the pcv valve to add oil...

Can someone advise me on the correct PVC setup on a 1967 327 Turbofire. I have the hose running along the passenger side valve cover. The valve is about in the middle. Is there a support bracket as shown in the assembly manual?
