Last night I pulled apart my Hurst shifter and want to clean and re-assemble it. I don't think it's every been rebuilt and the grease that there looks pretty dried up and dirty. Is there a special kind of grease or should i just use some good old axle grease?

Clean it up and try some LubiPlate white litiumn. You could also try some dry graphite. You will get dirt in it eventually.
