Hi all,

I want to resplatter my trunk. It already has some on it but not a complete coverage, Can I just splatter over the old and do you splatter up the sides and on the underside of the area that goes back into the package tray area.

Thanks
Ray

why not, but be sure to use the same color and the clear sealer.

I did mine last summer. I used the OEM Paints Spatter (Aqua and Black) and Clearcoat. You can buy them in Ricks or Classic Industries. They are the correct color and its good quality stuff. Looks great.

Hi Thorpe67rs,

I was looking at the same splatter you used from Rick's , How many cans would you estimate I would need of the OEM Splatter and topcoat to do the entire trunk , sides and top?

Thanks
Ray

I used the same thing from Rick's in my trunk. I think I bought 2 cans and it was barely enough to do my trunk. I also cleared coated it with a non gloss clear in a spray bomb and it seems to be perfect.

ray- ditto above comments. Make sure you clearcoat it or it won't be very durable. Mine was somewhat soft until I applied the topcoat.

I recently did my trunk and it took two full cans to get nice coverage. I stripped the lower section and POR15'd it due to some surface rust. I had no trouble spraying it over the existing spatter paint that I didn't strip off. The part that I used POR on blended right in with the unstripped part and it looks as good as new. The whole process took about 3 hours. Good luck.

Scott.

I did my whole trunk with POR gray after sanding and etching and metal ready prep. I used 2 cans of the splatter paint and light 2 coats of it. When first coat is still tacky, then 2nd coat, then when thats still tacky, I did 2 coats of Clear over that since the spackle will melt if water hits it.

I did mine but did not use a clear coat on it. I installed the mat into the trunck instead. I pulled the mat out just before winter storage and to my horror, found rust developing.

This may be due to me not putting a clear coat down. I don't know.

This may be due to me not doing a perfect job on removing the rust. I thought it was done well. I don't know.

This may be due to the car going through the dew point and condensation being caught between the trunk mat and the metal. I don't know. This is the one I suspect but I never really hear anyone else complain about their trunk liner, so I guess not.

I just I don't know. What I do know is, I'm going to fix the rust, resplatter and clear coat. The trunk mat is going in either the trash or storage.

I hate fixing stuff I've already fixed.

Rick.

Rick,

Use the POR15 and you will never again have rust. Spatter paint, even with clear over it does not prevent rust from occuring.

You should have a good primer down first(or POR will work) because the splatter paint is water based. Thats why it needs a clear coat.I guess it could cause rusting if it were sprayed over bare metal.

I read an article in one of the hot-rod mags where they re-did a truck and suggested putting down a base coat of any color metallic paint on the trunk bottom first to keep any residual rust from leaching thru the spatter coat. Even with the clear-coat, rust will show thru. Spatter is not intended to go over bare metal. It needs a base coat.

My car was sandblasted on rotisserie and so was the trunk, then painted chassis black and then I applied the trunk splatter. I need to update the pics on my webpage.

Yes Por15 will kill it all but after splatter you do need clear sealer or over time paint will yellow with mat over it.. you can still do this easy as Plasticoat makes various GM splatters, green, gray , aqua , ...

Rick's seem to be termporarly out of their OEM Splatter paint, Anyone know of another good source. Or an alternative to the OEM that Rick's sells.

Thanks

I've used the Plasticote that i bought at Advance Auto Parts and it looked good.I used it for touch up on a trunk i had previously done with the GM splatter. Most auto parts stores carry the Plasticote.Although i had a hard time finding the black/aqua,most have black/white.I did find it though. You can also go down to your GM dealer and order it from them.I posted the part GM # here before. If you search on trunk paint you can find it.

Quick update

Bought the Aqua-Black splatter paint from Eastwood and the clear top coat. Turned out great, laid down two coats of splatter and two coats of clear.

Thanks

After primer I used a black semi gloss to cover and then the trunk splater. It helps seal and You use les splater,It also seams to have a rich look to it. splater doesnt seam to be a continuus cover, and clear coat can only do so much.
One thing for sure is rust never sleeps!

What about Ground-Up, the site sponsor? I'm sure they carry it.

Just be sure to clear coat it or it will wash off with any water....
