Here's a tag from a car I am interested in. The seller claims it's originally an RS/SS. Haven';t seen the car yet, but he sent me this pic of the tag, with a description of his decipher. But it looks funny to me. I guess the rivets are missing??? What's your take on this?

I see the rivets. They really have a very thin rim or edge. Definitely a real tag.
The rear end date falls just before cars build date, which is good.
It had\has a midnight green vinyl top.
Can he get the engine stampings?

Looks real to me Steve, the rivets are there, someone just poked the center hole through the seam sealer or dum dum...Is it local?

Below is a transcript of what the seller sent me in an email. It isn't advertised yet, but wil be soon. I still haven't seen any pics of the car. Somehow I must have contacted him in the past and he kept my information. He's asking 28k. Sent me this email:

It is an original RS/SS with the research I have done on it, and with the information I have and some of the characteristics of the car I'm sure you'll agree. The car was assembled in November of 1968 in Los Angeles. I don't have a build sheet or protecto plate. I do have a receipt on the engine rebuild in 2002.

It has a 350 engine and a turbo 350 tranny with a 12 bolt rearend. The date code on the rearend is 10/21/1968.

The paint was was originally Frost Green with medium green interior, It has the rally wheels and rear wheels were modified with an offset.

The car has power windows and it is an air condition car from the factory, although the AC is not connected. Disc brakes, Cherrywood dashplate.

I don't know what a tulip panel is, but every thing else you aked about is in excellent shape. It is a rust free car.

I did not restore this car, I did put in a short ratio gear box after I bought it earlier this year.

Engine isn't original, the 010 block wasn't used until April of 69, and the 186 heads were not typically used on L48 engines. Ask him how many fuel lines are under the car, 1 or 2?

That car was made the same week as mine and our body numbers are close. Whats the VIN? I found my buildsheet above my tank, maybe it's still there.

Date code on my rear is J-8-8 and 10/16 on the axle stamping. My LA code is H744.

3.08 rear seems odd in that car.

BL - 3.07. Probably an automatic.
Really tough to tell it is an LM1 or a L48........

Steve:
You might want to also have him get you the engine Suffix and casting date at the same time.
These will help you tell where and when they were assembled.
The engine casting number is several weeks earlier than the earliest I know of.

Here was his email to me:

The car has the 2 fuel lines, a 3/8 and a 1/4, youwere asking about. It also has the proportioning valve for the disc brakes under the car on the drivers side. It also has the hanger bracket on the left side on the frame by the rear wheel. It was used when I had the exhaust extended from the axel to the rear of the car.

The engine suffix and casting date were shaved off during the engine rebuild according to the receipt I have. the receipt says on it that the block was decked.

I did drop the gas tank yesterday to see if there was a broadcast sheet, but didn't find one. So I took some pics while I was there.

The vin# is 124379L508224
The title says it was first sold in 1968

I appreciate the info on the engine and heads. Since it doesn,t have the suffix and casting date, I didn't know how to check without pulling the motor and looking for the casting dates.

Attached are more pics

Built just 2 weeks after mine. I see where it could be either the L48 or LM1. Id lean toward LM1 with the 3.08 in it. I would think the SS would have higher gearing?

Same here, probably an LM1, bummer that the suffix was decked, that would have told you for sure.

Nice looking car none the less.

My RS/SS has a 3.07 rear axle in it which was the economy axle for an L48.

3.07 was the std gear for automatics with both LM1 and SS cars. So it's no help.

You ALL Rock! 9 out of 10 things brought to light here I would have never been able to discern.... the other one I would have just faked my way through :) (j/k)

Now comes the $64,000 question: What do you think the car might be worth? You all know everything I know (and more) about it. The only thing I know that you don't is what he is asking for the car. So, rather than jade your opinion by giving up what the asking price is, let's play a little game:

Whoever comes closest to the actual asking price will win an all-expense paid vacation to Pyongyang, N. Korea. :) Or, we could just play for the fun of it. Whaddayathink.... What's he asking for it and / or, what is it worth? ---- (If you already know about this car and what he is asking for it don't give it away).

I'll take a guess that he's asking $28,000. What do I win?
