View Full Version : How to get more hp from a 89 305 tbi
Soniz Oct 9th, 06, 11:15 AM Hello this is my first topic to the camaro forum.
I have a question ,how is the easiest way to get more hp from a 89 305 tbi from original 195 hp to approx 250-270 hp ??
PS I live in Sweden.
bearcat44 Oct 9th, 06, 11:36 AM Simple. Step one: Remove 305
Step two: Insert 350 and enjoy:D
J/k, I'm sure others will chime in but it may take some doin to get that anemic 305 to push 275 horse... I'm not an expert on that engine though.
Welcome to the group by the way!
Motorhead62 Oct 9th, 06, 11:23 PM Replace it with a 382 ci Stroker TBI engine!
DjD Oct 10th, 06, 08:34 AM This is sold already but should give you an idea or two... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280034691445&sspagename=ADME%3AL%3ALCA%3AUS%3A31

bills68camaro Oct 10th, 06, 09:46 PM Here's A Tbi Combo I Ran Years Ago In A K5 Blazer: Stock Internal 5.7k Motor (tbi), Added An Msd 6a, Msd Tbi Coil, Taylor Wires, Electric Fan, Hypertech Stage 2 Chip, Full Length Headers W/ True Dual 2-1/2" Pipes & 2 Chanber Flows Out The Back, No Cat. Converter (shhhh!), Tbi Spacer, Open Element Air Filter. With 4.56 Gears The Thing Would Roast 35" X 16" Wide Super Swamper Boggers From A Stop In A 6000lb Blazer. I Know It Was Bigger Than Your 305 But The Same Mods Would Work Well In My Opinion. The Headers & Exhaust Were The Biggest Difference. When I Sold It, I Put All The Stock Exhaust Back On & It Felt Like It Lost 100hp. Good Luck.

85camaropos Mar 18th, 07, 02:37 AM the 305 has the same external deminsion the only real changes you need to make is the fuel injectors or have the stock computer reprogramed i belive the motor mounts are even the same .and the trans bolts right up.i'm no expert either but i've owned two 305 cars and the only good thing i can figure about them is the speed parts bolt right to the 350 when u get sick of trying to mod the 305
Buddy_Lee Mar 18th, 07, 05:48 PM there a camaro in a magazine 305tbi '89 its got alot of bolt ons(i dont know what they were b/c a friend told me) and a turbo running 7.5s in the 8th
wiskeesour Mar 18th, 07, 07:02 PM EVERYTHING will interchange. I have done this with that very car same yr same car. put a 10:1 350 with a Comp Cam xe274. Works great...runs today.
Put a 350 in it. it will work fine.
scooterist50 Mar 26th, 07, 01:10 AM dont feel bad swdenguy itoo just got a1989 rs with a 3o5. the best thing so far has been a high flow cat( or just bypass it same either way i suppose) and duals with a flowmaster or some type of performance exhaust. are u looking to spend a good amount of money or are u broke like me lol. i like my car and like the power. 1989 rs 305 tbi 58,000 origional miles! :beers:
02 camaro Apr 6th, 07, 10:02 PM there is a few things depend on what you have get a k&n air intake kit 10-15 extra hp!
now you at about 205 then you can Get the bigger TBI unit thats mabey like an extra 20-30 HP
Now your at 230Hp
Then you could upgrade all the guts to forged everything then get like a stage one turbo im guessing like an extra 30-40 Hp(not even shure if you can put turbos on camaros)
Now you at 280!
Then a 200shot of nitro!
Now your at 300+HP! and like 15-25000 down the draIN!

JimM Apr 21st, 07, 06:26 AM All engines will respond to "the normal mods", even a 305. Breathing is the key of course, the more air you can get in and out, the more power she will make.
Problem is the small bore size puts a limit on things, so you really have to think about how much power you want for how much money you are willing to spend.
I'd start with the exhaust system (you could keep that when / if you go to a 350!) Shorty headers, big pipes, high flow cat.
Then for the intake, a decnt dual plane 4bbl manifold and a Holley TBI unit. (The Holley is a bolt on, and has an adapter to fit a 4bbl manifold, it is 670 cfm)
Then I'd put on a set of 1.6 rockers to get a lil more out of the cam specs.
And either have it retuned or get a Holley computer and tune it yourself with a laptop.
I see the Holley tbi's on ebay cheap all the time.
I'd recommend that if you need to open up the motor (cam or head swap, or it needing a rebuild) to just bite the bullet and get a 350.
