View Full Version : It appears as though the leak has been defeated.

After replacing the oilpan gasket with a one piece (did not fix the leak), I ended up going with the standard 4 piece. However, at first that did not fix the leak either. I then tried to smear the front of the timing cover (the lower part) with The Right Stuff. That did not fix it either. I then dropped the front of the pan, replaced the rubber seal there, and put The Right Stuff on both sides. There you go, no more leak. I was also getting some dripping from the passenger side valve cover (gathering on the starter). I took the cover off, used The Right Stuff on the gasket (rubber gasket) and sealed it up. No more leak.

Is this the way I wanted to do this? No, not really. You cannot see the sealer on the valve cover (used very little), and I did a good job of applying it in the timing cover, so it is ok with me.

I have been battling this leak (or leaks) for about 6 weeks now. I have yet to drive it, so maybe they are still there, but I am confident I got them all. What a frustrating experience. I have done several motors, and this is the first time I have ever had leaks, ever.

Anyway, I think the saga is over for now. I only hope my tranny leak was a result of over filling, and not somehting else. We'll see tomorrow when I drive it. :)

I always figured the drivetrain would be the easy part of this project.

Awesome. I hate it when you put so much effort into something and it still comes to bite you. Good to hear it's solved.

I hope tomorrow night you are saying the same thing. If you get done driving it tomorrow and find leaks im taking bets that i will hear you all the way over here in NY. Good luck.

Yeah, you probably will:)

I know I have been whining about this for a while now. I read every thread for the last 5 years (love the search button) about any leak from any part of the car. Valve covers, oil pans, intakes and timing covers seem to be the most common. I was fortunate enough to have ALL of them. Thanks to all that have been under the car with me. It was a team effort to be sure. :)

I'll add this link so that anyone searching in the future can see where this thread came from.

I drove it today. All oil leaks are gone. I do still however have a slight trickle coming from one of the tranny lines. Should be an easy fix, or at least much easier than the other stuff I have been working on. At least I can drive it without it smoking like crazy. :)
