View Full Version : What's it worth--85 Iroc--900 miles
twotoejoe Oct 12th, 06, 07:07 PM I'm not up on these 3rd gen cars but I've run up on this car and I think I might be able to get it, I just have no earthly idea how much its worth. 85 Iroc, only 900+ original miles. Red w/ red interior, the plastic has never been taken off the seats. TPI car, auto. Of course it still has all the original paint and has always been garaged. The original owner died shortly after purchase and his son just has never wanted to drive it. I think he said the only things he has ever changed is the battery and the fuel pump. Anybody got any decent guesses on what it is worth?
kz1000ltd Oct 12th, 06, 08:20 PM Just a guess, but with that low mileage, 10K maybe?
dsherw00d Oct 13th, 06, 06:50 AM This was the first year of the IROC, so maybe worth a bit more. It's also the first year for the TPI LB9. Inside the center compartment, on the lid, should be the RPO sticker. These are the codes that determine what the car has - motor, gears, rear, etc. http://www.thirdgen.org/1985-chevy-camaro has a good overview and lots more informaiton on thirdgen.org and camarosource.ca. These cars are also new enough to have the paperwork still available from the GM Archives - you can order a copy of the invoice.

twotoejoe Oct 13th, 06, 07:14 PM Thanks for the info. I don't think I can buy it for 10k!
shep69039 Nov 2nd, 06, 02:19 PM what is a 91 1Le worth?
dsherw00d Nov 2nd, 06, 03:22 PM You might want to try here - http://www.camarosource.ca/main_new_site.php?url=open_new_layout.htm. A 1LE Players car (a factory prepped race version) is listed for $16k. If it's low to average mileage and in good shape, probably 8-12k. I think less than 500 of these were made. 87 Verts seem to fetching the most $$ for a 3rd gen and they are around the 14k mark for a nice one. However, I've seen people ask 20k+ - don't know of any who got it.
The members on the Ca forum as well as thirdgen.org are really into the third gen Camaros. I have a 88 IROC Vert, a 80 Z28, and a 69, so I'm bouncing between all of them.

South Side Goons & Hitmen Nov 3rd, 06, 02:46 PM For value on these cars www.nada.com is good. You can also find some on kelly blue book www.kbb.com.
It's sad to read the story about the kid's dad passing away. Especially if the guy was young kid or in his early to mid teen's. I can undertand not wanting to sell the car, especially when it's brand new like that. Accoring to what I researched, 900 miles adds $1,637 to the normal price of early 3rd gen's. It doesn't make a car that is worth 10-12 grand worth 30 grand like some sellers think it does.
For collectability and reliability I would stay away from any 3rd gen that has a 305 engine in it. 305's are JUNK!! I know I had one in a 1984 Z28 w/ T-Tops, 4 wheel disc and a factory 3:73 gear. It was the H.O. Engine. That car was loaded to the max. If it was me I would go with a 5.7L in a 1988-1990 IROC Z. I'd rather have T-Tops with a 350 in it than a Convertible, Hard Top or T-Tops with a garbage 305 in it. I mean no disrespect to the 3rd gen owners with 305's in their cars. I just strongly dislike the 305. It's a junk engine. The camshafts were always going flat way too early in them, among other problems.
I've had 4 Camaro's. Two 1969's & two 3rd gen's. (1984 Z28 & 1988 5.7L IROC-Z).
If you can find a 1990 IROC-Z 1LE, that is the car to get!! It's probably the rarest of 3rd gen cars. For those of you thinking the 1982 Pace Car Z28 was probably more rare. Yes it could be. But, that car is equipped with an anemic & pathetic 305 and the even more sorry @$$ and pathetic cross fire injection system. It's arguably the worst fuel system ever made.
Just my 2 cents worth.
P.S. The early 1980's Cadillac's or should I say cr@pillac's with the D.F.I. 4.1L V8 were the worst engines of all time.
dsherw00d Nov 3rd, 06, 04:04 PM 305s RULE!!! - I just swapped out my 350 for one:) Not really. I don't mind the 305s as long as they are the correct models. They are not all the same.
I would add that the LG4/LO3 305s should be avoided if posisble, but the LB9 305 TPI motors are OK performers and have different cams, heads, hydraulic lifters, and of course, the same TPI as thier 350 TPI big brothers. I have one - it's in a vert - and that's the only way you can get a 3rd gen vert. If you want a 5 speed manual, you most likely will have to accept the 305 also. Whether t-top cars recieved 350s in certain years has also been debated.
I agree that the cross fire injection was a big miss. I've heard the 82 Camaros were a mess since they tried to use many of the leftovers from 81. I think the first factory injected Camaro was in 81.
South Side Goons & Hitmen Nov 3rd, 06, 06:10 PM dsherw00d,
You are close on 1981 vs 1982. The first computerized (ECM) Camaro was the 1981 model; the last year of the 2nd gen. In 1982 as you know they changed the body style. That was the first year of the cross fire injection set up for the Camaro. The Camaro last used it in 1983. In 1984 they went with the HO engine VIN # G for the Z28. Any 305 made from the 1970's through the 1980's with a carb on it was junk!! Including the engine that I had in the 1984 Z28 I owned.
The 350 TPI first debuted in 1987. It was never offered in a 3rd gen convertible from the factory. GM did not offer it because they were concerned about torque & body twist in the convertible with a 350. It was offered as an option in hard top & T-Top cars.
You are dead on about the 1982 & 1983 Z28's & the Camaro's. They were a mess. The body on a 1984 Z would also rot to hell after 7 or 8 years. In 1985 they made some subte changes to the Z28's appearance. The most noticeable was the hood. It was also the first year for the TPI engine and the debut of the IROC-Z.
Thank God these cars improved each year in the 1980's. Man I remember those days like it was yesterday and that was 20 years go. That's scary!!
P.S. A little know fact when these cars were willing to race was that ALL 350 engine cars came with rear disc brakes. Not all 305's did. That was a helpful fact when people I knew were racing against these cars and wanted to know what the guy had under the hood. The last time I owned one of these was 12 years ago.
