View Full Version : 350 numbers help
Hot 67 Oct 15th, 06, 01:57 PM I've got a sbc 350 crate motor with under 10,000 miles on it. Not installed at this time as I have a 350 TPI motor in my 67 Ragtop right now. Anyway, I'm looking for help of determing just what I have and what will be the best route to go to get the most umph for my buck.
The engine is a 4 bolt main with these numbers on the rear left side on the block. 10066036 has 223 on the pax side rear. Heads have the following number 93417369 stamped on the valve train area of the heads. No numbers on the front or rear of the heads. Pistons and rods are factory stock. Has a Lunati cam PN 00010 with advertised duration of 292 int and 292 exh. Has a preformer RPM manifold with a 700 Barry Grant Demon Carb.
What kind of power should this engine produce and what would GM Preformance Vortec Heads Do for it. Is there a better cam for this set-up assuming I go to the Vortec Heads. Engine will have a 700 r4 behind it with 373 posi gears.
I've pulled all the rod and main caps and all looks great. I've been very careful to get everything back in original positiion. I havenot pulled the heads or any of the pistons out yet.
Thanks in advance for your help
Jerry
ace's68 Oct 15th, 06, 02:09 PM 10066036...350...........2 or 4...Target Master/Goodwrench crate motor, 2-piece rear
seal, "Hecho en Mexico"
could not find any thing on the heads
my friend runs the same motor stock and he says its 290 h.p. stock.
Hot 67 Oct 15th, 06, 02:33 PM Thanks Ace's... That's kinda what I thought it might be. Heads are stock to the engine so I dont think they can produce much.
Any good ideas for improving HP and torque. Engine probally has never seen 5000+ RPM and probally wont very often so low end power is what I'm after.
I just want to smoke the rice burners..
Thanks again,
Jerry
ace's68 Oct 15th, 06, 02:45 PM ha ha dont we all want to smoke ricers! you cold get some good after market heads, and if u want to change ur cam it would be wise to get good lifters so if u ever need it to rev past 5,500 the lifters wont float. a edelbrock performer e.p.s intake is good for torque, also are your pistons flat top, dome or dish? i would go with a fat top piston and 64 chamber heads if u want to replace the pstons...
pdq67 Oct 15th, 06, 02:50 PM I have a Melling version of that cam in my about 9.5 to 1 CR., 406 and I figure it really need's 11 to 1 CR. to run it's best!
You will be down around say 8 to 1 so that cam is waaay too big.
You will need to figure out what head chamber size and headgasket thickness will give you say up to about 10 to 1 CR., b/c of your -12 cc dished pistons!!
You really need 4-notch flat-top pistons, .020" thick steel shim headgaskets and a 64 cc head to create about 10 to 1 just like it was done back in the day.. Original 350SS L-48 motor spec's here is all....

Hot 67 Oct 15th, 06, 03:00 PM Right now , I dont know what type pistons are installed. Whatever is stock to these engines. I dont want to replace them if I dont have to, I want to keep the machine shop work to a minimun if I can. I'm gonna be doing this on the sly so my wife doesnt get wind of what I'm doing. She thinks the TPI engine is just fine. But it seems like every day I gotta fix something with the injection system. So it's back to a carb for me. I think a good set of heads and a decent matched cam should give me somewhere around 350- 375 HP with good low end torque. Oh yea, I forgot to mention I gotta pass emissions here in AZ. I need some good help from the engine builder here.
Thanks
Jerry
ace's68 Oct 15th, 06, 03:49 PM im not sure but i think the crate motor u have has flat top 4 valve relief pistons, i will ask my friend who has the same style motor monday.
peacock71 Oct 19th, 06, 08:17 PM I purchased a set of new Dart Iron Eagle heads (cast iron) complete on eBay for $829 delivered. 2.02 and 1.625 valves, 200cc intake runners, selection of chamber sizes. Haven't fired up the motor yet, but these are suppossed to be nice flowing heads.

Cast iron looks stock and prevents you from going too high on the compression cause cast won't handle much more than 10:1 due to heat build up. Use a 72 cc chamber and a cam like the Comp cams XE268-H-10 cam. (224 intake 230 exhaust durations @.050, .477 intake and .480 exhaust lift) 1,600-6,500 rpm cam and a Performer rpm intake (air gap as well) and you should have a torquey motor. This cam allows you good vacuum at idle and good street/strip performance.

Did you get a chance to talk with your buddy concerning the spec's on his pistons in his Target Master crate motor. I'm still undecided as to what heads and cam I should go for to get the most bank for my buck with this engine.Suggestions from you engine guru's are greatly appreciated.
Thanks all,
Jerry
