HI, MAYBE YOU GUYS CAN HELP. i AM HAVING A PROBELM WITH THE POINTS ON MY 350 300 HP AUTOMATIC CAR. iT HAPPENED TWICE NOW. I WAS DRIVING ALONG AND THE CAR FELT LIKE ALL THE ELECTICAL WENT OUT LIKE A FAST HESITATION, THEN IT WAS OK. WELL BOTH TIMES AFTER THAT WHEN I STOPPED THE CAR WOULDNT START. AFTER CHECKING A FEW THINGS THE FIRST TIME, I REPLACED THE POINTS AND IT FIRED RIGHT UP. A COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER ( and maybe fifty miles) SAME THING. I PULLED THE POINTS OUT, AND THEY LOOKED BURNT AGAIN, I CLEANED THEM WITH SAND PAPER AND THE CAR STARTED RIGHT UP. DROVE IT HOME WHERE IT NOW SITS, EVERYTHING IS TIGHT ALL THE GROUNDS ETC... SHAFT IN THE DISTRIBUTOR HAS NO PLAY, ANY IDEAS............................??? THANKS

a bad condensor would be idea one.
Another possibility is that the stock resister wire has been removed and replaced with a regular wire at some point. This wire goes to the + side of the coil. It's easy to spot because it's got a white braided fabric insulation.

Do the points look like one side has a mountain on it and the other a valley? If so it's the condenser. If they are just burnt you are getting a full 12 volts to the points for some reason. Has someone changed the wiring around for some reason?

I my self have been there and gone through that as well. Do a Distributor Conversion. Get rid of the points keep the Distributor and upgrade to a Per Tronix Solid state ign sys. You will be glad you did.

You might also try a different brand of points. Back in the early 70's I was in a shop with a company that had a fleet of 1/2 and 3/4 ton pickups. Our purchasing agent made a 'real deal' on Blue Streak ignition products. We started using them and shortly thereafter began having points problems. When we switched back to Echlin our problem was solved. Don't get me wrong here, I haven't used any points in anything other than a Ford 8N tractor so I can't cuss or discuss Blue Streak or any other kinds of points now. This was just to get my 'point' across to try another brand and see what happens.

As stated, best bet is to do a conversion and get rid of the points..
