Hi:
My passenger side window has the Astro Ventilation graphic frosted or painted in the front corner of the glass and I assume this is the original glass. The drivers side window does not have this graphic. It looks like it might interfere with looking at the rear view mirror. Did this graphic only come on the right side or was it on both sides and my drivers side is a replacement?

Thanks

Mark,

Both sides had the Astro Vent graphics, but it was discontinued in November, 1967 due to "safety concerns". My car (a 05D build) also has the Astro Vent graphics, but both pieces of glass were made in August, 1967. Late cars like yours and mine are notorious for having "left-overs" installed on them, but it appears that you only got one where I got both. What's the date code on your glass? You can read the CRG REPORT (http://www.camaros.org/glass.shtml) on glass for what to look for.

Ed:

Thanks for the info. I will read the CRG report and check the dates on the glass. I know my drivers door has been replaced and I believe the right hand door is original because of the color and the crayon markings.

Here is the date code and information off my windows:
Right side: SOFT-RAY
SAFETY L FLO-LITE
AS-2 O AZ-10
F
SOLID TEMPERED
M74
Left side: SOFT-RAY
SAFETY L FLO-LITE
AS-2 O LX-10
F
SOLID TEMPERED
M74
So one window is from September of 1967 (with Astro-Ventilation graphic fired on inside of window) and one is from March of 1968 (without Astro Ventilation graphic)

Mark,

I would say they're probably both original to your car. Like I said before, the late cars always got "left-overs" so it's not unusual to see some WIDE date codes on components for cars manufactured late in the model year.

I'm sure Mark Canning (Mark C), Kurt Sonnen (Kurt S), or one of the other guys from the CRG would like your info if you haven't already submitted it.

Thanks for the input. I have submitted some information to Kurt like engine stamping, cowl tag, VIN, transmission and rear end date code etc. To avoid a thread drift I will contact Kurt to see if I need to try to put this all together in one information package so the car can be documented as much as possible. Not sure if they want all this kind of information?

Yes, the CRG is interested in ALL information. Especially anomalies like this. The information they gleen is used to write the reports like the Glass one referenced above.

Astro imprints came on both door glass. And it came with-out. When you ordered your car ,You could check the box for astro, on the order form. But the dealer told you it was a 50% chance of getting it. There is a company that sells stencils ....

I'm sorry Flynn but that's not quite correct. The Astro Vent etching wasn't an option you could stipulate to the dealer. It was a marketing tool used by Chevrolet for the new fresh air inlet system on the Camaro, Corvette, and most other 1968 models. With the elimination of the Vent Windows on most of their models, Chevrolet came up with a "new/improved" system and called it "Astro Ventilation". Some models like the Corvair, which continued with the Vent windows, didn't use the dash balls and knobs associated with the Astro Vent system. The etching on the glass was simply the advertisement, like the "Air Conditioning" decal on A/C cars.

In November of 1967 Chevrolet discontinued the etching on the Camaro because of concens of not being able to see the outside rear view mirror clearly. Although it was discontinued on the Camaro, I believe the Corvette continued with the "Astro Ventilation" advertisement through the mid 70's. (The outside rear view mirror on the Corvette was placed higher on the door, so the Astro Ventilation etching didn't obstruct the drivers view.) Although most 1968 Chevrolet models had the "new" ventilation system for 1968, I believe only the Corvette and Camaro had the advertisement etched in the glass. Some of the other models had an "Astro Ventilation" emblem placed on the dash.
