I have pulled out my points dist to replace points with Pertronix igniter kit, While it's out is there anything I should do for maintenance. I have cleaned it up but should I lube anything? and with what? Any tweaks or is it fine as is. New springs or weights? Everything looks normal as far as an old dist is concerned. This is a BB 396 stock engine.
Thanks

check the shaft for wobble (bushings) and end play. Check the distributor gear for wear. Make sure the holes in the wieghts that go on the pins are round not oval. Some say to put some lube on the pads where the wieghts slide, I generally don't.
Best of best would be to have someone spin it up on a sun machine, make sure the spark don't scatter, and map the advance curve, changing it as required.

Since I haven't done a pertronics conversion, I'm not sure how they sense spark. I *think* they use the breaker points to trigger an HEI module. If that is the case, the rubbing block on the points should be lightly lubed with silicon grease which is generally included in the package of new points. Be sure to put the lube on the back side of the rubbing block. Don't over grease it or grease may sling out into the points gap and create a problem (a night I'll never forget).
