: epoxy primer
loneman Oct 18th, 06, 08:08 PM I will be getting my body Shell media blasted soon. My question is are there different grades of epoxy primer by the same manufacture? I believe I read on here there are different grades of top coat paint, thats why I am asking about the primer. Also what prep should I do before spraying after it is blasted. Things seem to have changed from what little painting I did with acrylic enamel years back. All Help is appreciated THANK YOU.
Steptoe Oct 19th, 06, 03:11 PM The epoxy has to go on very soon after the metal is blasted....
IE the specs here for building girders is 20 mins max before the surface as molicular rust forming.
Here media blasters spray the surface with epoxy as part of the job...often refusing to do the job unless they expoy....They have often had come backs where ppl left it sit too long, and dont need that crap.
1969ss Oct 19th, 06, 03:43 PM Steptoe, sorry I have to disagree with you on this epoxy time, I have sprayed epoxy over a year after it was sandblasted, and those parts are still good twenty five years later, it depends, if they aren't rusty, you can do it anytime. Also I didn't use any metal prep, just sprayed them, this was with ppgs dp.

So u are saying in that yr there was no surface rust, or u sprayed over the surface rust without cleaning off?
20 yrs ago Blasting companies used to use a eitch primer, this was nearly transparant...thu not recommended to leave for extended periods a good coat would last a long time...maybe yours had a etch primer coat, if no surface rust.
If u go back thru body posts, the general concenis of guys who work with panels .."never leave steel open, seal as soon as possible"
Sand blasting panels is also not a good idea..too much heat and warpage etc...again dissicussed at some length in old posts.
There are far better alternatives to sand.
loneman Oct 19th, 06, 04:40 PM I never said I was getting it sand blasted. My question is about epoxy quality, what type or brand is best, and are there different grade qualities under the same brand name.
1969ss Oct 19th, 06, 05:44 PM Loneman, I don't know, but I copied your question, and I think I can find the information on what you want tonight, I use several different car forums in the evening.
Sorry about getting off the subject on your thread. Steptoe, if you want to thrash this out, start another thread, and I'll go there, that way this gentleman can get answers on the real questions at hand.
Sorry Rob

Dan Schoenecker Oct 19th, 06, 08:16 PM Make sure you "Prep Sol" (cleaner) the car down first. Then use an etching primer which can be followed up with a primer/surfacer.
