Hello,

Is it okay to paint directly over a 2K primer (PPG NCP280) that has been sanded with 500grit? I am getting ready to paint a metallic base coat clear coat (PPG DBC/DCC). I've done so much work to get the primer blocked flat with no stratches < 500grit that I don't want to risk the sealer running or adding orange peel. Is this reasonable? What are the +'s and -'s?

Sand it with at least 600g and you will be fine.

400 to 600 is fine. We usually go 400 then a quick 600 acrross the grain. You may find the paint company will not like 600 grit for adheasion purposes, but if it is a metalic, you will be happy. We do not use sealer. Every sealer I ever tried went on to peely and makes the base cobly and ruins ultimate depth of the finish

What I hear is to use another coat of epoxy as a sealer before paint because it is water proof. Primers, base, clears are only water resistant.

Wow,

Thanks for the responses. I have about 180 hours on the body I just hate the idea of covering it with a sealer that could screw up.

You and me both. I'm doing another car and laying the color right over the primer. Cut in so far and it looks good. :hurray:

I agree. A sealer is not necessary. If a sealer is applied properly, it should smooth out enough so as not to effect the smoothness of the basecoat. I use PPG myself and have done both. I have used sealer only when I was painting over a previous paint job. Good luck on your paint project.
