View Full Version : opinions on daily driver car
my camaro loves my money Oct 19th, 06, 09:41 PM We are all here cuz we love camaro's but obviously they cant be are daily driver with todays gas prices and insurance fee's. I need a car for high school and am looking toward something with speed. Don't have a lot of money so can't go out and buy like a brand new car. I was thinking about maybe buying an import car that I could fix up. Any good cars to start out with that have a light weight or a good look would be appreciated.
fossilrunner Oct 19th, 06, 11:18 PM Go with like a 3rd gen with a 5 spd. Decent gas milage cause the 305 and pretty cheap too.
parkbrau Oct 19th, 06, 11:23 PM 72 Pinto Runabout. 2.0 with 4 Speed. Chicks dig 'em. Just enough room in the back seat for......carrying your school books.
Lbrty9 Oct 20th, 06, 04:13 AM My mildly built 350 gets about 17 mpg... not too bad, and it IS a daily driver.
1PartsGuy Oct 20th, 06, 01:44 PM 97-99 pontiac grand prix GTP cheap, fast, and not too bad looking
BonzoHansen Oct 20th, 06, 02:32 PM An LS1 Camaro gets 25-30 MPG highway.
IMO, it is nice to have a Camaro to tinker with, and a daily driver you are not inclined to tinker with. My DD is a 2002 Olds Intrigue. Maintenance only.
Previous to the olds I had a 93 Civic EX 5-speed - that was a great car - i think the Civics went down hill in style & got too complex for an econo-o car ater 95. I bought mine before 'rice' was cool. Also, no mods (except CD player and snow tires)
MrDanB Oct 20th, 06, 07:05 PM i have broken down your post and answered your plea for direction as best as I could. The more reliable the school commuter is, the more $$ you will have for gas, dates, Camaro parts, etc;)
We are all here cuz we love camaro's... Yes we do!!
I need a car for high school and am looking toward something with speed.
Why do you need to go so fast to get to school? Hauling butt in town is dangerous!!
Don't have a lot of money so can't go out and buy like a brand new car.
When I was in HS, i had a crappy old Toyota. i understand the feeling of low $$

I personally would look into a 4-door Accord, Camry, Civic, something along those lines. The engines last a looong time with proper care and they get good gas mileage. They are not too slow, but then, you don't need to haul butt to get to school and go on dates ;)
thedugan Oct 20th, 06, 07:25 PM How much do you have to spend. How about a Ford Lightning so you have a pickup bed to haul your camaro parts.

Lies, all lies.
69 350 SS Oct 22nd, 06, 05:08 PM I just picked up a Lexus IS for my DD...... All I can tell you is its one of the best cars I have ever driven (for what I want from it anyways)
but I don't know how much you want to spend?
W.A.C Oct 22nd, 06, 05:58 PM I have owned a ton of cars over the years. But my no frills 1998 Honda Accord that I picked up 2.5 years ago as a cash car gets 30 mpg and is SUPER dependable. Even better, I can get what I paid for it at any time.....
kleptopigdog Oct 22nd, 06, 06:26 PM a pick up .How do'es anybody get by without a pick up?

j/k
Your main issue with anything fast is going to be insurance. LT1 4th gens are good buys for $/hp, but I would think the insurance would still be pretty high.
Like mentioned earlier, the late 90s/early 00s Grand Prixs could be a pretty good option, especially the SC'd cars. Fairly quick, dependable, practical, and good fuel mileage.

Not sure why you need "speed" as a high schooler. Why exactly is that? I am sure that what looks good to me would likely not look good to you (as a high schooler and all).
I should mention that I would pit my Intrepid against any import in the same price range for speed, handling and comfort. My daughter drives it now, but I still drive it occasionally. It is very spirited, and roomier than most imports in the same class. Easy to find at a good price, and we get 24mpg city...33 highway. That would be my recommendation for someone wanting a little spirit in their ride, with comfort for those times when they are driving like they should be. :)

Old car cost $$ NO payment cheap insurance

Old car bad on gas cheap to fix (and almost anybody can fix)
My DD 71 Chevelle convertible (When dry) 78 F-250 when wet
