While taking my front fender off my 67 the bolt broke and the captivating nut must have broken it's tack weld. This nut and bolt are located just in front of the door and below the roof pillar. How can I hold this nut to extract the bolt? Can I gain access through the side kick panel inside the car? Is it a good idea to tack weld this nut to the sheet metal then extract the bolt? for repair purposes it almost seems as though the car was built around this nut.
Thanks Brian
P.S. This forum is the best thing going!!

Grind the bolt head off, pull the fender then worry about getting the nut out. The nut is a 1" square metal nut tackwelded into a recess at the bottom of the unibody just infront of the rocker. More than likely you have torn up the metal of the body and torn the nut loose. You will probably have to reweld it inplace after the fender is off. You can't get to the nut through the kick panel area.

This happened to me. I dont know if this is the right way to fix it but this is what I did. I centered the bolt and nut, then I welded the nut to the body. I still could not get the bolt out, so I cut the head of the bolt off, cleaned up the threads and put a nut on the end. The fender went back on and I had to make the hole bigger so I could adjust the fender. I hope this did not confuse anyone. Darren

You can "feel" the nut through the kick panel if you remove everything but I could not find a way to hold it. Grind off the head to get it apart. Unless you are replacing some of the cowl sheet metal you might want to consider drilling it out and using a big riv-nut (like a pop rivet but with threads inside)or trying to weld a nut from the outside.

I guess I was lucky. Mine broke off flush, I drilled it out, starting small and working up to a 5/16" bit. After chipping out the remaining pieces, I ran a 3/8" tap thru to clean and straighten threads.
