View Full Version : Soated Header Pics.
camaroman7d Oct 28th, 06, 08:44 AM I sent my headers out to get coated not "Soated" last week (Thursday) and got them back yesterday (Friday), About a 1 week turnaround (including shipping). I know I have recommended this place several times. I went with their coating called Ceramakrome. I was torn between that and the Stainless coating. They are very similar except the Stainless is less shiney. They also have black, platinum, aluminum, and can mix colors. The place is Caps Brite Hot Coatings and they are in Fresno, CA. Very good people to deal with and I recommend them for those looking for header coatings (they also coat other things i.e. rear end housings, manifolds, etc..). It cost me $280 with shipping and insurance for $1700. Regular headers are cheaper but, mine are multi piece (8 pieces). Normal long tube headers are $225. Excuse the dust on the rest of the car I am in the middle of doing bodywork.

clwilcox33 Oct 28th, 06, 08:58 AM That looks sweek Royce!
Martineer Oct 28th, 06, 09:15 AM Beautiful. Wonder if they will turn blue? And no, not trying to rain on your parade.
Steve69SS396 Oct 28th, 06, 10:10 AM Royce - I had Caps do the headers on my El Camino and I agree. They were excellent to deal with and the headers look great.
camaroman7d Oct 28th, 06, 10:43 AM The headers will not turn blue. I had the same coating on another car. It is a hi temp coating like "Jet hot" etc... If they ever dull, you can also polish them back out using aluminum mag wheel polish. I sold my old set to a friend and after 5+ years they still look great. The headers themselves are steel.
Steve, Which color did you go with? How's the El Camino coming along? I read the thread about you hurting the Camaro, is it back on the road?
Martineer Oct 28th, 06, 12:26 PM Sounds good, Royce.
Tokyo Torquer Oct 28th, 06, 12:26 PM I never thought I would see Royce going for the "krome", since you always mention your dislike of chrome. They look real nice though.
mike
camaroman7d Oct 28th, 06, 01:26 PM They are not chrome. I don't have anything against chrome. I just prefer polished stainless and polished aluminum. The headers are ceramic coated and if you look closely they are about the same color as polished aluminum (valve covers, front of the heads). The reason I prefer polished is because I can repair it and I can make all kinds of shiney things, it doesn't chip or peel. There will be lots of polished items on the car but, the only chrome will be bumpers, and trim pieces.
There are no chrome parts under teh hood. The A-arms are stainless, intake, blower, linkage, scoop is all polished. The dip stick is polished aluminum, the steering shaft and u-joints are all polishd stainless. The polishing was all done at home by me (except the blower) but, I did polish the intake.
I do not "dislike" chrome, it's just not for me. It is a lot easier though.
zdld17 Oct 28th, 06, 02:55 PM Those are awsome motor assembly pictures. Who's crank, rods and pistons are those? Looks like lots of good assembly..
camaroman7d Oct 28th, 06, 03:02 PM Double D,
The pistons are Wiseco, the crank and rods are Eagle (4340 forged). Thanks for the compliments. This engine was in my 70 Camaro as well and will be replaced with a newer blown engine as soon as I can get around to building a new one. There is nothing wrong with this one and it will go into another toy. I just have some "better" parts, Lunati crank and want to use a Dart block next time around. Hopefully next winter I will be able to build a new engine. I am not comfortable with the factory block as far as really punishing it.
zdld17 Oct 28th, 06, 03:05 PM You are right, when you got that much in it,, whats another two bills. Goferit.
DOUG G Oct 28th, 06, 04:10 PM Next time warn-a-brother  <--shades needed.
Looks great !
JimM Oct 28th, 06, 04:13 PM Looking good, Royce!
Methinks you are having WAY too much fun building this car!!
Steve69SS396 Oct 28th, 06, 05:00 PM Steve, Which color did you go with? How's the El Camino coming along? I read the thread about you hurting the Camaro, is it back on the road?
Royce - I went with the Ceramakrome like you did. I've been playing with the Camaro so much lately that I haven't touched the El Camino. I'll finish it this winter. Just need glass, bumpers and trim installed.
Camaro is still down. In addition to breaking the rearend and driveline it twisted the output shaft on the transmission. While the trans is out I'll put a transbrake in it. :D
BigRed-L72 Oct 28th, 06, 05:25 PM Sorry, but I just can`t get passed all that disgusting "dust", it`s such a distraction...
You could`ve at least ran a feather duster over it...jeeezum :)

That's what I was thinking. Thanks for speaking up for the rest of us BigRed!!
SixtyAte Oct 28th, 06, 05:56 PM Royce...
Real nice and well worth the price for sure. Thanks for posting this
Kev
rojo Oct 28th, 06, 06:08 PM So Royce, are you going for next years Ridler Award or what?
camaroman7d Oct 28th, 06, 09:03 PM You guys are funny. I have seen so many nice cars on this site that, I wouldn't even want to park next to (for fear of making mine look silly). This is no show car, I will drive the wheels off it once it's done. It is far from perfect it is just a project that I am having fun with. The car really is dusty, it didn't show up in the pictures as much as I thought it would.
Thanks for the compliments. I don't really get into the "show and tell" but, I thought it might be helpful to those looking for header coating. There are other options besides "Jet Hot".
Steve,
Sounds good (El Camino). Sorry to hear you did so much damage (Camaro). I don't have any of the parts you need laying around or I would offer them to you.
68rs406 Oct 28th, 06, 11:45 PM Nice Royce, I'm really looking forward to seeing that car done, it really is looking good.
Those headers are a work of art, lemons does nice work.
Oldani Motorsports Oct 29th, 06, 05:29 AM Here's a couple photos of my headers, coated by Nitroplate in TN. Excellent service and quality. When they coated the merge collectors I'd asked them to make sure the tabs were TIG welded on. Got a call from them telling me they were ready to ship out to me, and I asked them to make sure the tabs were welded on. "Uh-oh!" was the response. So, they stripped the coating off, and then sent me the collectors so I could properly position the tabs and weld them on. They also sent a shipping call tag for the return trip. When coated they sent them back again with no shipping charges. Pretty darned good service if you ask me. Talk to Chris A. Tell him I sent you, and he'll show you why so many racers use Nitroplate's stuff!

ps... the headers were raced for one year with standard collectors before I got the merged ones... so you can see how they look after a year of use!

Eric68 Oct 29th, 06, 06:51 AM Steve, did the car pick up with the merged collectors? How did you size them? I heard there is a lot of trial and error finding the corrcet merge collectors.
Royce, your headers look great  Do you have any pictures of the entire engine compartment you can post?
camaroman7d Oct 29th, 06, 07:33 AM Eric,
I don't really have an engine "compartment" at this time. The front sheetmetal is all off (radiator support, etc..). I will snap a picture or two and post it/them.
camaroman7d Oct 29th, 06, 08:02 AM Here are a couple I just snapped. There really isn't much to see, the engine fills up the compartment. Let me know if there is something specific you want to see. Iam heading out for a softball tournament in a few minutes but, will check when I get back.

Oldani Motorsports Oct 29th, 06, 08:35 AM Eric, not sure how much they'll gain me. From what I've been told by some very sharp people, in the area of a tad less than 10 hp. But... every little bit helps with a tiny motor like that, lol! Plus, I had no need for the pan evac stuff anymore in the original collectors. The guys at Nitroplate shot me a terrific deal on the merge collectors too, as they carry Dynatech products. It is enough to make you cringe to see how much you have in a set of headers when it's all added up... yikes.
Eric68 Oct 29th, 06, 01:12 PM Cool Royce :D very cool :D Can't wait to see your car finished and on the road . . . BTW you are making me jealous with the softball tourney comment. Our season has been over for two months now . . .
Thanks Steve. I am pretty sure at this point I will be building my own headers next go around, so I might as well start with a good collector. Might be somethiong to do this winter to keep me from going insane . . . I can't play softball all year 'round like some of those California weenies LOL
Drag Fabricator Oct 29th, 06, 01:33 PM Royce, looks fantastic! The whole car is really looking cool, i like fact that you went with steel for the tin work.
I've been doing the tin work on the strut car i built at work, tin work aint easy!
I'm considering removing the exhausts system over the winter and building a set of stainless headers with merge collectors, megaphones and reverse cones.
Steve69SS396 Oct 29th, 06, 09:05 PM Royce - Thanks for the comments about my Camaro.
Your car is looking good! What color are you going to paint it?
camaroman7d Oct 29th, 06, 11:08 PM Thanks guys.
Eric,
Sorry about the softball thing. It was cold, ummm I mean cool. It was all the way down in the lower 60's, lol. It's even in the lower 50's right now. We do pretty much play year round other than the rain outs during the winter and the occasional fog out. If it makes you feel any better we stunk it up 0-4 for he day.
Brian,
I went with steel tin work because I will be driving the car and don't want any rattles (or at least limit the chances). If it were a race only car I would have probably used aluminum. You're right it's not easy but, it's fun. As you know you just can't get in a rush or you will be making things several times. I made cardboard templates for every piece.
Steve,
The car will be blue with a white top. Nissan 350Z blue.
Everett#2390 Oct 30th, 06, 04:35 AM Nice looking car & project, Royce. I feel the same way, why build it if you're not going drive it.
Keeping the car two-tone is good, Nissan Blue is nice.
Eric68 Oct 30th, 06, 05:40 AM Serves you right Royce, everyone playing softball in the winter when I can't should loose at least 0-4 LOL
I'm already going stir crazy so I decided to start taking mine apart yesterday. I'm pulling the motor and building some headers . . .
Oldani Motorsports Oct 30th, 06, 05:50 AM I agree, nice car! Just put a smaller pulley on top!!! :)
camaroman7d Oct 30th, 06, 06:37 AM Eric,
Take lots of pictures when you are building the headers. I really wanted to build my own but, didn't even know where to start. After seeing how it's done, I know I can do it.
Steve O, I am making 12lbs of boost with the blower 10% under. Once I build a new short block (using a Dart block) I plan to turn up the boost. Just not sure how much this factory casting can take plus it's .060 over. I am also at 8.47:1 compression and running pump gas. It's plenty for the street but, as usual we all want a little more. If I can make my goal of a 9 second pass on pump gas and drive it to and from the track, I will be happy (I don't care if it's 9.999).
Everett,
I really like that Nissan blue too. I build them to drive and don't even own a trailer. Too much time and effort into it to only enjoy it 1/4 mile at a time. Though I will build a drag only car at some point, I just need to have a street toy too.
