Looking for some good advice on choosing Sand Blasting or Chemical Dip for a ground up build. This is my first ground up and I’m trying to gather some insight from others who have been down this road before. What are some Pros and Cons of both? And does any one know of a good source for Chemical Dip processing in Michigan or a state near by?

if you dip it be sure and remove everything you want to save,, seen dipping eat trim tags up and it also takes all of the seam sealer out

Do a keyword search. You'll get plenty of data. I would not dip it. It leaves residue and if not removed one hundred percent it can cause paint failure. All I've done for decades is chemical or machine stripped and sand blasted ,but obviously not blasted flat panels. Aluminum oxide is now the weapon of choice, soda does not remove corrosion, only paint. My opinion of course, there are many others. Make your own decision. If you've never done this type of work before there is much to learn.

My preferance would be to blast.Blasting doesn't remove anything that you cant put paint back onto.Even with my next project being cleaned with the quarters, tail panel and outer rockers off the body I still feel there would be places that I couldnt recoat if I had it dipped such as between the roof skin and the inner roof structure,or between the layers of the cowl panels.Maybe if I was going to also have the upper and outer cowl panels and the roof skin off I would consider dipping, but even then there is no advantage over blasting.Another thing to consider is that the factory put a lot of wads of dumdum in between some welded panels to stop them from rattling, after you dip it the dumdum is gone and you cant put it back.

Avoid dipping. Have the car media blasted. You will be happy with the results and you will save alot of heartache. Dipping involves everything to be removed from the car, EVERYTHING. I agree with Jet in the above response.

Jack...

Here is a link to a company that does my blasting and powder coating. They have done a lot of work for me and their prices are reasonable. They can handle a complete car on a dolly in their booth and they use mostly Glass Bead to keep the heat down.

We chemical strip the outer body and sandblast the rusty areas, compound areas and jams. Sandblasting in the jams give a very nice etch so you don;t have to worry about adhesion in hard to get to areas. The checmical strip can be done in most cases in 2 days and 2 gallons of stripper in a driveway.

Lay some plastic on the ground and have fun

If you can see all of the surfaces on a part then blasting should work but on parts you cannot see all of the surfaces then dipping could work better.

Like anything else, things can go wrong with either process.

I've had things blasted and dipped and have had good and bad experiences with both.

I went with blasting after talking with friends who had tried dipping. The blasting found every weak point in the metal that needed work. Very pleased with the way the paint looks on the car and feel confident that I won't get rust pop out. I have used chemical strip on aircraft and with every job found we missed spots in the seams where the stripper hid and later bubbled the paint. Sand shakes out of everyplace, especially under the dash.
