I found a spring and a collar (with two set screws) in the bottom of my fuel tank and have no idea what they are for. I can't seem to figure out how to post a pic of them...

Sounds like your sending unit is falling apart. What year and make of car?

I have a '69 RS Camaro. I pulled the sending unit out and it appears to be in tact and was working fine (aside from the disentegrated filter sock). I ordered a whole new sending unit from classic industries anyway. The spring and collar appear to be too big to belong to this assembly. The only location it appears to be able to fit is over the float foam???? The photo of the new unit does not show this spring/collar...I'm stumped.

I don't recognize your description as anything that belongs anywhere near the gas tank on a firstgen. pics would help a lot.

I bet you it is an old spring off a filler nozzle from the gas pump. Is the wire dia @ 1/16?

I have one in my tank-How do I know? I broke it off in there around 1985 when I was in hurry filling up:clonk:

I remember years ago when the gas prices hit hard in early 70s, they sold a anti-siphon kit which had a spring and metal block off cap. It would prevent a hose being put into the tank to siphon gas however still allow the gas to enter the tank past the spring. Could this be remnants of that ype of device ?
