I have a 69 z28 and the thing has had some charging/starting issue forever I finally got around to pulling of my alternator and having it tested at autozone (by a competent employee:) ). It failed. This is the original gangster numbers matching deep groove pulley ect. I want all the guts inside replaced so it's good as new. where can I send this thing and how much $ is going to cost. I just want to know if anybody has had good luck with anyshops or what ever. I did a search and there weren't any solid anwers.

Where are you located? I would feel better taking to a local shop and being very up front about wanting your orig case back... Here in San Jose I have used a shop called AutoLectrics and been very happy with the work...

You can probably find a local shop to rebuild it. Just make sure to ask how they refinish the case. Some will paint them, some will blast them. Neither look correct.

I believe it is a type of chemical cleaning that some use that will look right.

if it's cosmetically how you want it, that autozone, or a good napa, will be gladd to sell you the bushing, brushes, and diode block. You'll have it done in an hour, and it will never leave your garage.

If you do it yourself, don/t forget to replace the bearings.

When alternators are rebuilt the armiture contact are turned in a lathe.
You can do this by using a strip emery paper and a leather boot lace wound around 3 times. By pulling back and forward on the boot lace ends and moving up and down the area resaults can be accieved as well as a lathe.

Before dismantling, mark which way the case 1/2s go together....
If u dont you will assemble everything, go to mount it in the car and find the mounting holes are all wrong....back to square 1

Wow, times change! I used to do mine by testing each diode and pressing in new ones. Until I upgraded to a Summit high amp kit my highest cost was five bucks. It's really easy.
