: Got my 69 Z up on a dyno today, here are the results
69z28boy Oct 30th, 06, 06:44 PM OK,
I finally got my Z up on a dyno to see just what she'd do.
here is the cars breakdown.
Stock DZ302.
Predator Cams version of the 30-30 ( not a blueprint but a tweaked version)
still 254 at .050 with 485 lift on a 114, but has faster ramps.
The carb is an 830 AED Eliminator double pumper and i think this is why i didn't make more torque down low. There is a bog that happens at 2000 rpm and it shows up on the dyno. I'm going to be putting my OE DZ 4053 Holley back on.
The car now has 1968Z28 Headers. the repop ones that cost about 1800 bucks. I have a 2.5 mandrel bent system with a PYPES crossover and RaceFlow muffler.
UNFORTUNATELY, I wasn't able to do any tuning prior or during the runs. The valves havn't been set in months, I have no idea where the timing is at the moment, and the carb is not the right one for this car... so go easy on these numbers LOL..
The guys at Livernois Motorsports were very impressed withthe numbers from an all stock 302 Chevy.
I have a crossram and 140 cam, and this is going to be the next step along this joyride.

DZ Fool Oct 30th, 06, 07:18 PM Thats about 353 Hp at the motor . Congrats
Real Small Blocks have a 3" stroke
69z28boy Oct 30th, 06, 07:23 PM Thats what I came up with also..
i really wished I would have planned to do this.. i would have set the valves, and made sure the correct carb was on etc.
I drove the car today becasue it was so nice here in Michigan.. and while i was at the speed shop getting some flywheel bolts for my pontiac, they were writing a guy up for a dyno run... and I asked about it... and he said... we can get you in rightnow LOL..
so I did it.

69z28boy Oct 30th, 06, 07:24 PM So when they rated the 302 at 290/290... they weren't far off... LOL
but I don't think they were reading rwhp/rwtq
DjD Oct 30th, 06, 07:33 PM You're carb choice didn't really effect your low end power. In fact it may have provided just a bit more low end over the vac sec carb. The headers are the biggest power adder over the stock config and I bet your timing isn't set to factory spec's. Your little mouse did very well that 2000 rpm flat spot should not be too hard to tune out. Did they give you any air fuel numbers?

Don't be so sure about that. If they didn't read rear wheel numbers, then they factored it for insurance reasons.
Great post to start tonight out with! I am not sure I would feel comfortable spining mine to 7500 rpm, but would like to verify the numbers.
Eric68 Oct 30th, 06, 09:01 PM You got some cahones pulling a stock DZ to 7500 :D
Nice pulls, I like it
69z28boy Oct 30th, 06, 09:06 PM well I figure, Its seen 7500 rpm at least 50 times since i've put the motor back together... and no issues whatsoever...
although I've never pulled it in 4th gear there...
the speedo needle was seperating the A and the C in the little AC logo LOLOL
there were about 10 guys in the shop that all came over to see what was making that racket.
there is nothing like the sound of a small block buzzing its way to happiness LOL

JimM Oct 30th, 06, 09:08 PM Very nice. HP equalled my 383, tho at 1200 rpm higher.
bet she was SHRIEKING at 7500r's!!!
Dirt Reynolds Oct 31st, 06, 03:13 AM You got some cahones pulling a stock DZ to 7500 :D
Nice pulls, I like it
I was just thinking that -- those 302's can sure reach for the sky!
VI018DZ Oct 31st, 06, 06:02 AM Nice run,
Is that cam set at 4 degrees advance?
Interesting peak hp is at 6600 if it is.
Can't wait till I get my predator cam in!
Todd
DZ Fool Oct 31st, 06, 07:28 AM I think we need to do a track day with our 302's . JimM has done some nice work trying to put together events.
If this could happen having a track day I think I will put in some 4:88's or a 5:13.

Mwilson Oct 31st, 06, 12:28 PM nice, love to see someone spin'em up
rogue68 Oct 31st, 06, 01:16 PM Wish I could rev my 400 to 7500
69z28boy Oct 31st, 06, 02:25 PM with enough heads, cam, intake, and exhaust,
you can rev a 400 to 7500..
as long as you have the Fuel to do it..
i have a 428 in my pontiac that sees 7500 once in a while..
but it has a 1/2 inch fuel line, and 850 holley, a big *** cam, and plenty of head volume LOL
Thanks
Aaron
Neil B Oct 31st, 06, 02:39 PM Congrats. Those are really good numbers. Your motor has unported heads and the stock intake?
69z28boy Oct 31st, 06, 03:45 PM yes... the ports are untouched....
in the bowls, I cleaned up a little of the flashing, but we didn't open the pockets or raise the roof or anything like that... just a good 3 angle valve job
i do have screw in studs and guideplates..
the intake is dead stock.
BelAirBob Oct 31st, 06, 07:13 PM Take a listen to this. Should sound familiar... :) Click on the pic and the fun begins....;)

pdq67 Oct 31st, 06, 07:15 PM Very impressive to me!
TonyX33 should be chiming in here too!
7,500 rpmm for a 302 is about right to me b/c I figure a more "balls-out" built one should go above 8,000 EASY!!
I used to rpm my old junk301 with no more than the little-bitty Duntov cam up there until my points would bounce alot. No power increase up there at all, but she'd sure do it!
ANd I bet the boys really dug the sound up high just like you said!!! He, He!

69z28boy Oct 31st, 06, 08:52 PM They loved the sound... even through full exhaust..
i'm surprised that the peak hp was only 6600rpm..
now i'm sure my timing was off, and i'm sure that the valves were out of adjustment... although still in good enough tune to hit 300hp at the wheels.
i put a light on the car today and it was at about 43 full advance... LOL
i put it back to 36 and it seemed like that miss at 2000rpm was much less noticable.
I'm sure that the timing combined with out of adjustment valves hindered the torque curve and peak numbers.

Gary L Oct 31st, 06, 09:49 PM Open exhaust would have been interesting.
Dirt Reynolds Nov 1st, 06, 03:28 AM BelAirBob -- is that screaming small block a 302? Yikes -- that thing went over 8000 RPM a few times!
z/28-69 Nov 1st, 06, 04:54 AM like that sound to much:-)
69z28boy Nov 1st, 06, 05:30 AM Yeah.. that video was awesome..
i'm guessing that it has the 140 camshaft... or an aftermarket roller.
i had a solid roller in a 302 a while back and it was out of controll..
it would be at 7k before you could blink an eye. But it was a smaller camshaft than the 30-30 and the idle gave away the fact that it wasn't stock so i removeed it... didn't perform the same, but that car... like my current car was too nice to be beatuing up to 7000 all the time..
now that I know my peak hp is below 7k, i'll be shifting a bit earlier.

According to Pipemax, the choke rpm for your cam/heads is about 6000, so it's not surprising to see the power peak at 6600. In order to raise the choke rpm to 7000 you'd need about .550" lift on the cam. There are other factors, like the intake configuration, exhaust tuning, etc. The dip in power at 2000 may be wave tuning as there is another dip at double the speed, 4000 rpm.
We run a reasonably stiff timing curve on our road racing motors, all in at about 4000 rpm to reduce the chances of low speed detonation. I wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to get a 302 with a 254° cam to run well below 3000 rpm.
