View Full Version : Canfield 310 BBC heads with pwr steering and headers?
jski67 Nov 3rd, 06, 03:59 PM Hello all,
Is it possible to run the 310 Canfield heads with power steering? If so, what headers did you use?
They look like great heads for a 489 I'm building, buy I'm worried about heade fitment due to the exhause ports being raised .600 inch...
Thanks,
Jason
bb489 Nov 3rd, 06, 07:29 PM FWIW, I have a set of Brodix Race Rite Rect ports on mine (496 BBC) and they have the stock exhaust location. I used Hooker Super Comp headers and it is tight, but they fit with only minor alterations. If I had .600 raised ports, I would have had a lot more "denting" to do. This is in a '68 Camaro. One of the reasons I went with Brodix's heads. Maybe call Canfield and see if they have any recs?

jski67 Nov 4th, 06, 08:48 AM Thanks Patrick. I was originally looking at the Race Rites, but the Canfields looked a little more affordable.
And for my build, my interest in aftermarket heads is more of a business decision than a power one...I just can't bring myself to spend a decent amount of money rebuilding my 781's.
In the long run, I probably should just pony up for the Brodix...I'm sure I won't be disappointed.
Thanks,
Jason

I used Lemons on mine with the Canfields. Fit awesome, but they are more money than others.

Go to the team Chevelle site and looke up Mike Lewis (a.k.a. Wolfplace). he owns a racing shop out in Ca called Lewis Racing Engines and has a website of the same name. He can get you what you need from Brodix or AFR at a really decent price. My Race Rites have the CNC chamber at 115 cc. Also, Mike is a top notch guy and will spend lots of time on the phone with you giving his vast expertise and advice. I bought an entire Brodix top end kit from him which included the heads(complete), intake manifold, valve covers, studs, gaskets (manifold and head) ALL for around $2700. Got them in about a month. Also got my cam, lifters, and carburetor from him too. I pretty much built the same motor that he had built and dynoed a while back and it dynoed at 615 hp and around 600 tq. All I can say is that it runs on high octane pump gas and is an absolute beast on the road!! Ditto on the 781s. I had a set of 049s I was gonna have ported but that was going to cost a lot of money. Now I got a better head that is a hell of a lot lighter too. Plus they look cool. If I can help any more with part numbers or info let me know. Check out Mike's site or give him a call. I promise you will not be disappointed.!

Jody, I looked at the Lemons and they do look nice, but you're right, they're pricey. For the extra cost of headers, I guess I might as well pay the extra for the Race Rites and avoid the fitment problems.
BB489, I'd appreciate more details on your combo. Is yours primarily a street or track car? What type of cam?
I may get flamed for this, but I'm trying to be realistic in how much power I want...sure 600 hp sounds good, but do I really need it? I have no plans to run sticky tires or go to the strip, so is that much power on street tires a complete waste?
And I've already contacted Wolfplace...he was helpful in emailing back and had very fair pricing. To be honest, this is the first time I could actually afford aluminum heads, but I guess I'm gun shy about laying out that kind of cash, especially when there's a lot more parts to buy. But aluminum heads
are just so cool... :)
bb489 Nov 6th, 06, 09:12 AM Hey Jason,
Heres the details on my motor:
496 BBC
forged Eagle crank and H-Beam rods
SRP 10.5-1 pistons
Brodix Race Rite Rect Port heads 115 cc chamber with CNC option
Weiand Team G single plane manifold
Isky Solid roller 256/260 @ .050, .680/.680, 110 lsa
Isky Red Zone roller lifters
Comp Pro Magnum full roller rockers
Pro-Systems 1000 HP carburetor
Hooker Super Comp headers with 2" primaries.
3" exhaust to factory dumps behind the quarter panel-Super 40's
TH-400 with 3.73 posi.
This is a street car with little strip time. I've run a best of 11.8 at 116.4 mph at the strip with 275/60/15 BFG street tires. Of course had to baby it out of the hole. Suspension wise-just sub-frame connectors, Hotchkiss sway bar and Bilstein shocks all around. I think this combo is good for about 600 hp or more.(Wolfplace dynoed a similar motor for 615 hp). It drives great on the street and actually doesn't do THAT bad on gas, until you smash the go peddle that is;) . It has a great idle and the sound is mean. In regards to your question about needing 600 hp for the street, my answer is this. Go drive a 400 hp car, then hop into a 600 hp BBC camaro. That will answer your question in a hurry. Plus being able to smoke the tires at will at 30-40 mph is really cool. In other words, the power is always there when you want it but doesn't get in the way of normal driving. Keep in mind also that 600 hp from an almost 500 ci motor is very easily attainable and much easier on parts (and cheaper!) than getting the same power out of a 350 or even a 383 or 400 sbc I would suspect. Trust me when I say this, spend the money, build the beast, and unleash it. You'll never look back. I went from a stout 327 to the 496 and there is no comparison. I have been converted to the "Dark Side" for good.
