On my 2002 Camaro SS - The pass side window lift motor failed with the window in the down position?!
This was an aftermarket motor that i installed maybe a year ago :(

Every procedure I read described the motor replacement with the window up..


Seems like there is less clearance to get the motor out, but aside from that, it shouldnt matter, should it?

Has anybody done this?

Its not even funny how many motors my TA burned up in the 7 years I had the car. I think I replaced each side 3 times. After the first I found a model that has a lifetime warrenty so atleast I wouldnt have to pay for the motor each time it went out.

I never had to try swapping the motor out with the window down put Im guessing it would make the job a royal PITA with having to worry about the glass being down there. If it were me I think I would try and get that window up some how once I had the door panel off.

If you have already done this window before, then what type of fasteners did you use? If you used something like nuts and bolts then it shouldn’t be that bad but if you used pop rivets then you will have to drill them out. I did the drivers side about a year ago (2001 Z28-window was up) and I purchased some motors from a place on e-bay called A1 Auto (in New York), they have an order line you can call. I have the stuff to do the passenger side but haven’t had to do it yet (keeping my fingers crossed). IMOP I would just open it up and get to the motor and let it drop into your hands and then walk the window into the up position. That way you will have all the room that you need. A friend on the site here (DjD) sent me a procedure w/ pictures on how to do it and where to drill the holes. It really wasn’t that bad.

Mark - I did a replacement on the pass side already..rivets and access holds already drilled out..
It really is not a bad job, just time consuming..

I guess my main concern was having the glass down and in the way, or some other issue that made installation difficult...
I did get confirmation that once the motor is removed, I can manually raise the window and prop/wedge it in position..going to try this over the weekend

I have seen A1 Auto advertized..I think Autozone has lifetime warrantees as well

Yes Autozone has a window motor that comes with a lifetime warranty. Thats where I started getting mine after the first replacment died. I thinkt he brand was Siemon or something close to that.

I do have an second motor that I never installed on my driver's side..tempting to just use that, but scary if the failure mode is 'dead with no warning'

I will probably just head to autozone and pick 2 up..call it a day
