Hello.. I just picked up an orginal auto console for my 69 camaro. The console is not cracked or damaged, but looks kinda beat up. How can I restore the black finish? Is it as simple as black paint? How do I prep the surface with out scuffing it all up? Maybe this is a real basic question, but I want to do this right. Thanks... A

1st issue is removing all the polish used over the yrs
A damp rag with thinners, wipe down several times.
Dulon laquar is the best, over a mist undercoat. For small stuff like this I use a elcheapo air brush.

You can spay oven cleaner on the plastic and put in a garbage bag overnight. This should get most of the old paint off and won't hurt the plastic. Make sure you use the stuff in the blue can that doesn't require oven heat to work. Then you can wipe it down real good and spray with an adheshon promoter followed by plastic primer. Top coat it with semi gloss like OEM interior paint that you can buy at any restoration parts house. I've heard the Krylon fushon works good without having to use the adheshon promoter or primer but I haven't tried it. Good luck.

I cleaned mine good and used Mothers Plastic Polish. Lots of work polishing by hand, but looks like new again and no paint. Also did the same on my instrument panel.

I tried Magiuar's Plastix on several parts. Worked great on the cluster bezel
and lenses. Given that the console is textured, how did you get to work so that you didn't have the white residue in all the crevices? I tried it on my seat hinge covers and it's in all the 'nooks and crannies' and not easily removed.

Thanks

I have a few spots were the black paint is worn down to the white-ish colored plastic. I have to decide if a paint project is the way to go or not. seems easy just to touch up the worn down areas. Thanks agan.. A
