View Full Version : Needing some help
mbrown Nov 15th, 06, 10:15 PM Hi everyone,
So today I got my disc brake kit, and I started to assemble. and ran into a problem. I installed my inner bearing and outter bearings on the rotor, then I put the spindles thru the holes on the rotors. Now here the problems the spindles do not make thru the holes, not enough to start the nut on it. Should the inner bearing sit flush to the spindles? Do I have the wrong bearings? Am I installing it wrong?
Please advise, Thks
JimM Nov 15th, 06, 10:19 PM did you push it on all the way?
Sometimes you got to give it a spin and a "pop" to get the grease seal to pop on where it belongs and get that last 1/2"
mbrown Nov 15th, 06, 10:21 PM I have the bearing sitting flush with the rotors, I notice that the spindles on the back side is not flush, because the bearing diameter is not wide enough to go past a certain point.

mbrown Nov 16th, 06, 12:49 PM Any have some pics of the install process of front disc brakes. This would really help me out.
madmax87 Nov 16th, 06, 12:55 PM Did you install new races for the bearings? Are they in all the way?
mbrown Nov 16th, 06, 01:31 PM I did, but not sure the are all the way in, I used a rubber hammer to seat them.
Vintage 68 Nov 16th, 06, 01:41 PM I did, but not sure the are all the way in, I used a rubber hammer to seat them.
I'm not sure a 'rubber' hammer would have the thumpin' power to seat a race correctly ...
I usually press them in or use a drift and a large flogging iron (hammer) to drive them in if necessary.
The bearing race should be recessed into the hub @1/4" or so - plenty of room to drive the seal in - not flush with the rear of the hub, if that is what you are saying in your earlier post.
mbrown Nov 16th, 06, 01:52 PM yeah thats what I mean, so your saying I need to have them pressed in?
madmax87 Nov 16th, 06, 04:13 PM If you have an old race laying around, that is a great way to seat your new ones. Your going to have to remove your grease seal (probably going to need new one, they usually get damage when taking them out) and lay your old one on top and smack the new one in place. I too don't think you can do it with a rubber mallet. You can look inside the hub and see where it has to go to to seat. It will bottom out. Like Vintage said, at lease 1/4" How far out is your grease seal sticking out. The one in the back of the hub. It should be flush.
mbrown Nov 16th, 06, 04:23 PM all new parts I bought a disc brake kit from ground up

???? did you put a grease seal in after the greased bearing?
Does the seal fit flush to the back of the hub?
mbrown Nov 16th, 06, 09:54 PM solved the problem, I didnt need the outer rings that came with the bearings. the rotors had them in all ready. after I discovered that it all came together very nicely.
Thanks for all the input.
madmax87 Nov 17th, 06, 01:21 AM Yep, that will do it. Glad you found the problem.
mbrown Nov 17th, 06, 10:49 AM found the problem, I was trying to install the bearings with the new races, but the rotors already had them in. thanks everyone.
