NO No Z's were ever ragtops... in 68 they built one for a Chev VP but no others, ever.

Is that '68 in a museum somewhere, or is it still privately owned?

Well actually they did make Z/28 convertibles starting in 1989. :)
No 1st or 2nd Gen's ever from the factory
ASC did make a few customs in the late 70's and early 80's.

I really wanted one of those 89 IROC-Z Convertibles.

I had bought a new IROC-Z for $17K in 86.
After only 2 1/2 years...
I took my 86 into the dealership to trade it in on a 89 convertible.

I was very unhappy when the Chevrolet dealer offered me $4500 in trade.
Needless to say, I did not get the new car, and that was the last GM built daily driver I ever owned.
In fact I never bought another brand new car from anyone until 2004 -
when I bought my Tundra.

Those early GM cars just did not hold any resale value.

That's always been my opinion also. Why buy a real 68 Z for a parts car to build it with??? I've got my flame suit on so "go ahead on"

It's fairly well known there was 1 real '68 Z/28 ragtop built for Pete Estes to convince him to keep the Z/28 in production. The car has survived and has seen a bit of transformation since it's inception but is indeed valued at over 1 mil...

Like I said it went through some transformation but I believe all the changes on the car were done at and by Chevy... Search around there are some very good posts on the car...

I remember reading that the cars paperwork and keys were stolen out of the owners Suburban (I believe) when it was being shown somewhere. Were they ever recovered?

No. The thiefs also stole Al's wifes purse. The purse was found. Empty of course.
