On my 69 with disk power brakes up front and rear drum, the brake light has started to come on when you press the brake petal sometimes. If you pump them a time or two it goes off. The light is only one while the petal is depressed. I have looked for leaks and don't see any. Have pulled the rear drums and everything seems to look good. Any suggestions as what to check next? I don't want to run into a problem such as a wreck.

The light means there is uneven pressure between the front and rear brakes. If it's not leaking, try bleeding the system.

might also check the e-brake switch too, it could be loose.

How about an internal leak in the MC. I had that problem once. Changed the MC and everything worked better.:)

you did check the fluid level?
Low fluid in the front can be a sign of worn pads, or a leak.

Does the pedal feel any different?

Sometimes when the light comes on the petal feels hard. I think all of the brakes pads/shoes are in really good shape. When I got the car a year ago the fluid level was a little low but after I topped it off it has not lost any more. Nothing has been done to the brakes since I have had the car and it has performed nicely until recently.

The light is triggered by an imbalance in front and rear pressure at the distribution block. There is a lead that connects to the dist block and when pressure falls on one side or the other it signals with the brake light. Make sure everything is ok at the dist block and inspect all the brake line connections. When the light is on you basically only have half your brakes.

When I bought my 69, it had 4 wheel manual drums. I installed a covants dash kit with all new gauges and once I rewired everything, I noticed my brake light was on. Apparently the old light burned out. It turned out my rear drums were not working. A buddy and I bleed the system and the rear lines were plugged solid so I was driving around with front drums only. Thank god I noticed this problem right away. I think if you bleed your brakes, the light should go out, but I would monitor your brake system on a frequent basis.
The lack of brake maintainence prompted me to redo the entire brake system. Now I have new master, power booster, new lines, and disk in front. The light is no longer on and it stops much better, plus piece of mind knowing I'm going to stop.
