I have an HEI dist and today we decided to replace cap rotor and wires and plugs and coil. A basic tune up.. I have done this many times before so I feel silly for haveing to ask but after I put it all back together it won't start.. I did not remove the dist and I know I have the firing order right 18436572 . It is backfiring out of the carb and I can not figure out why. I have checked and double checked the wires and every thing looks like it is hooked up right... so I just don't know....

Any chance you may be one wire position off on where you have the number one plug wire? Bring engine up to TDC and pull cap off and take a quick look. If its 180 off, rotate engine 1 time and recheck.

If it's backfiring out the carb then the wires went on in the wrong place. Do like Max said.

I agree. Had the same problem. Had HEI connected properly but in the exhaust protion of the cycle. Check like the gyys said and u will find that the rotor is not at #1 at TDC
