Needing a new power steering box, mine is leaky something feirce after sitting around for 40+ years. Is it best to rebuild the original, or buy a new one? Price is a concern, but I've never rebuilt a box either. How difficult would it be to do, and what parts should I order?

Also, where can I find the coupler to connect the wheel to the box? Thats shot as well.

rebulding a power steering box is tricky business. Worth sending it out to a pro on a "correct" high dollar car, but a rebuilt box is less than $200. If you want to firm things up a bit, searth for "thirdgen steering box" A lot of us have done that. It's an iunvisible upgrade that makes a huge driving difference.

ap,

I agree with Jim get a 3rd gen box you will be happy you did. I got mine from a donor 86 Z for $50.00 It had a leak near the rag joint (coupler). It was a $13.00 kit with seal and with the help of this site easy to put in. In fact if you get a donor 3rd gen box you should replace the seal right away.

The rag joint is still available from some GM dealers or online stores like Ricks has it for $59.00 The difference in feel of the old ps to the newer ps is just not comparable. You will be very happy.
