I'm re-doing my interior, and in the process removed the kick panels. The kick panel vents are sealed from behind with massive globs of Dum Dum putty. Mine was pretty gross, so I pulled it all off and chucked it. Anybody know where to find more putty, or a suitable replacement for it? Some places have suggested using seam sealer.

Hi there shawn the product you are talking about is made by 3m and is called strip calking but to get the original stuff use buytal {spelling ?} tape they sell it in rolls I would get 1/4 inch it is just what they used in the 60's.It may be hard to get depending where you are.

Chris - When I dis-assembled my '68 it did not have butyl as a sealant for either kick panel. It did have the dum-dum type putty that Shawn is iquiring about. My car does have A/C so maybe that has an effect. Any thoughts?

Shawn - I ended up going to Home Depot and going into the section that has the self-adhesive foam tape for refrigerators. In the same section they had a Frost King dum-dum type product that was used for sealing seams around windows. It is a ribbon of sealant that will separate into 1/8" strips. I just rolled it into the necessary size. It releases easily (I think I took everything of my car at least twice during restoration!) but seals well. It also works very well for sealing the stainless weatherstripping retainer (located above the side windows)to the body. Shouldn't cost more than $5.

3M does also have a "dum dum" type sealer let me know if you want the 3M part number I have some at work and can post the part number if anyone would like it.

CarlC you are right. I was thinking of something else,3M Strip-Calk part# -08578 [black] is the right stuff to use.Don't use seam sealer! The cost of this stuff is 6.25 a box.
