Just took off the subframe of my 67 Camaro Convertible. Looking at the body mount areas, in particular the middle (cowl) area mount holes, I notice some deterioration of the steel from rust. The holes where the rubber mounts sit are slightly irregular and the inside edges of the steel are sharp from thinning of the steel.
I am looking for some advice here on whether I can get away with just replacing the rubber mounts, or if there is a repair proceedure to re-size the holes. There is sufficient steel to hold the mounts, and the vehicle didn't exhibit any sympthoms to suggest looseness, despite deteriorated rubber mounts. Any body have experience with this?

On my 68 frame all 4 body mounting points, the 2 at the firewall and the 2 at the end of the subframe were really rusted. One of the horizontal surfaces were the bushing sits was bent downward. Various places sell plates with holes which can be welded to these horizontal surface mounting points, however I though they were too thin. One company said they were 3/32 thick steel. I made mine out of 3/16 thick steel. The size of the hole is very important because the steel sleeve in the bushing fits snuggly into the mounting hole. This helps to limit any shifting of the body on the frame. I first bought the new bushings and them measured the steel sleeve diameter to ensure a tight fit. Hole saws got me close, but I actually had to ream and round file to the best fit. The plates were then welded in place. The position of the hole on the frame is also important. My 68 chassis shop manual lists all the hole-to-hole locations. If you need this info, I could fax or scan/email the appropriate pages to you on Monday. I also beefed up the side walls of the frame mounts with the same material. Maybe it was overkill, but I know it stronger now than it ever was. One last thing, the radiator support mount on the frame should also be raised by the same amount to keep the body and the front sheet metal at the same relative position.

I had to replace the same four points on my '68 camaro. I used the plates I bought from Classic Industries and they work great. I put urethane donuts in for the mounts and everything fits great.

I would suggest the same thing! Use the plates from Classic Industries.
