I'll probably get flamed, but hey I'm a big boy and can take just as well as dish it out. I joined this site/forum because of a number of factors including a lively discusson site for one of my hobbies and a place to share and get technical information on Camaros. While I don't beleive that we should limit discussion on non-Camaro or non-auto-related topics, I find it a little unnerving that there are quite a few posts that deal with political and other non-automotive topics. Call me an idealist, but the nature of this forum should be automotive and I believe for the most part it still is. However there are far too many posts that are probably more well suited for another site's discussion forums. Too much name calling, posturing, statement retraction and apologies take place in these non-automotive discussions and I for one would like to see just a little less of this interaction on a car forum site. If you need to address these types of issues in a public forum, I would suggest that there are other site more suited to these types of discussions. Just my $0.02

Are you referring to the "Bench Racing" section, or the "Current Events" section?

DougP
Nov 20th, 06, 05:15 PM
I was referring to the "Current Events" section. I do understand that I do not have to be part of that forum, but my feeling is that the topics and the "verbal tirades" could perhaps be minimized or taken to another environment.

Very true.

The origin and purpose of the CE section seems to have been lost and forgotten. Well maybe not.... quite a few have no idea why its there in the first place. Either way, it's become a farce.

It seems one of our guys called in help for his view points. That section was setup for our regular posters to have an off-topic area for discussion, not as a specific discussion area for anyone to show up and start posting.

They are not in "public" view (you must choose to join the Current Events Forum) so a lot of guys will not understand what you are implying.

This forum, Bench Racing is doing fine.

All you have to do is unsubscribe from it and you wont see the posts. I did that about 5 months ago and I dont miss it one bit. I'll never go back. It has help clean up the regular forums a bit. It also seems like an open forum to trash on each other and argue.

No need to comment on anything else from that section.

jonesy,
not to sound too ignorant but how do you unsubsribe from a individual post?

CFunK
Nov 20th, 06, 05:37 PM
While I agree the CE forum has gone a bit "south", I am a firm believer in turn the channel if you don't like the topic. That may have come across harsh, but that was not my intent.

I see real comedy value in the CE forum. I blew coffee outta my nose this morning reading some of the posts.

CE is the only subscribed forum section. You remove it the same way you join. Its in User CP.

Go to User CP , then Miscellaneous, then GroupMemberships and it's in there. You an check a box to have the posts and that section show on the list of forums or uncheck to show nothing..

Mine is unchecked, I lasted 2 weeks in there before I got bored with it.
I really dont care about peoples political beliefs or that 911 was a conspiracy etc etc..What a fricken joke. I am here to get away from that crap. I am glad it's in there and not out here.

I don't see any problem with it really. If you don't want to read it, as you guys stated , just unsubscribe from it. I find it very interesting because it kind of peels the skin off the onion and shows what people are like inside. Sure you can get flamed in there but it's no big deal. We're all supposed to be grown ups, just don't have to act like it in there.
Plus like CFunk stated, it's funny as hell at times.

It is no longer available just by clicking.
Due to the recent "non-camaro" signups any access must be now be approved. If someone signs up at our site simply to participate there, well, it's no longer possible.

This is a camaro site first and foremost, the off-topic area is a great place for regulars to discuss issues which used to cause problems on the public forums and perhaps some "risky" photos. ;)
I see no reason for it to become an area for those without an interest in our hobby to pound their opinions on us.

so does risky also double for risque? i hate to "unsubscribe" to that part of the forum because there was true entertainment value in some of the posts.
ps: thanks for killing the post in question!

CE will still be here, and the "New Rear Ends" have been deemed a vital part of Team Camaro, they will stay in all thier smooth round tanned glory. hehehe.

Hopefully the changes Al made will put an end to our recent rash on newbies who seem to have joined specifically to share their twisted political views and conspiracy theories.

Is there any way we can make the new policy retroactive, to say....oh, a week ago? :p

The sad part is that if they keep up their current rate, they will be "Senior Tech"s here on TC.

Way to go AL. Any chance of going further and requiring a profile.

Doug, think of the Current Events forum as a type of waste basket. It keeps stuff out of the real forums. I am glad you spoke up because I think you said what many were thinking.

Gary, thanks. My only point was that most of us can read and discuss those more controversial non-automotive topics in another forum. Like Jonesy said in an earlier post "...I am here to get away from that crap. I am glad it's in there and not out here." I agree with him. However........(see next response)

JimM -- man, am I glad to hear that. I wouldn't want to be the one getting blamed for interrupting the most popular and arguably most important thread in the forum. I'll be the first to admit that I get a smile on my face when I see that HaulnSS has contributed yet another piece of relevant information to that important discussion topic (which I immediately check out). :D

I think it's the season... Everyone is between cruising problems time and winter projects time and the board is knda slow. Tack on those few newbs, and that crap is all I saw when I hit "new posts" for a few days there.

Speaking of which, Mike, Craig, Dave, and... it seems we have a whole flurry of new stuff in CE this morning clogging up my new posts list!
I sense a conspiracy!

With the influx of "new" members/posters who claim they have a right to post anything they see fit because they are following the rules, consideration should be given to the benefit of having an unmoderated forum. Arguably the original intent is not how the Current Events forum is currently being used. I wonder if its worth keeping if the interactions and responses continue the way they have been for the past week or two?

DougP,
This is not a flame. Of course the CE forum is worth keeping! It helps keep the Camaro in Camaros.net. I think of CE as a "site" for Camaros.net folks to talk non-camaro stuff. It has been invaded lately by non-Camaros.net folks... but they'll get bored and leave eventually...maybe to Mustangs.net:thumbsup:
IMO, CE is not "unmoderated", there is simply much more leeway given in that forum by the Administrators. Threads have been locked/deleted in there. Although the system is not perfect, it keeps the "noise" out of the "real" website. Not a historian, I'm not sure (and don't care) of the "original intent" of the CE forum. My understanding was that Bench racing was broaching content that not all members found to be appropriate in one way or another. CE is place for ALL that content now. You have to SUBSCRIBE to view it. If it is objectionable then you can un-subscribe.
We shouldn't be talking of eliminating it...the nonsense would find it's way back to Bench Racing or somewhere...much more hassle to the Administrators, Moderators and members.
Scott

I subscribed to the CE forum spent about 10 minutes, and I wish I had that 10 minutes of my life back..clowns signing up just to spout thier conspiracy theories etc...ridiculous. The rest of the site is top notch, as are AL and DJD ...you guys should just do away with that train wreck in my opinion....just my .02

Actually, there was very little of the "clowns signing up..." before it was "fixed." Most of the guys in CE are long-time members of the site.

Like anything else in life, it is what "you" make of it. :)

Yes, I agree, which is why I no longer subscribe, great idea to be able to select to join, and yes, I know many of the members have been around a long time, (I joined in 2000), but it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the tree, and I think that is what happened, anyhow, I am sure you guys are under control of the moderation, and that is great. I hope people find the forum useful. :beers:

The CE section is entertaining at times, but just gotten ridiculous lately. What about a boycott for a week or so. No one post or respond to any posts there. Let the 3 or 4 extremists argue with each other. If ignored, they may go away.

Exactly. Without any responses what do they do? If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one there........ I think that type of person just wants a reponse for arguments sake.

Scott,
I agree with your point of view. I can certainly unsubscribe, but until the last week or so, the non-automotive discussions were lively and gave a little insight into some of the members views on various topics. Once the senseless back and forth banter started, it felt a lot less like a Camaro board with a current events section and more like a board that has been arguably hijacked by several folks who could and should have those types of discussions on another web site. Reading the previous few posts from some of the regualr members, I suspect that this "noise" may just be temporary. Oh well, no big deal. Hey, I just got done cleaning the taillight buckets and lenses on my 69. Turned on the gas heat in the garage for the first time this season and within minutes it was 70 degrees in there. Ready for the long winter project work-- yea baby!!!!!!!!

DVINNY, you are approved - this could take up to a day as I only check once in awhile.

Anyone who just joined the site is not getting access as they are not here for the camaro fellowship and simply want to promote their beliefs.
