I wanted to see if anyone rembered the blue max camaro.I belive it was joint venture between Car & Driver magazine and the Roger Penske Trans Am team.
It was billed as the ultimate 1969 Camaro, painted dark blue w/ yellow pinstriping, it also received the 1970 LT-1 350 engine, 4 wheel disc brakes, and maybe the cross ram , but I'm not sure.

This would have been in the late 1969 or early 1970 range,it was quite an extensive article. Also I think Car & Driver gave it way to a reader or subscriber, this was 36 years ago so some facts maybe a litte fuzzy.

Also finding this car would be pretty cool, if anyone has any info please chime in.

Car is in NJ I believe, well known among East Coast Camaro people. It did not have a cross-ram while at C & D.

I have an old magazine with an article about that car. If I can find it, I'll scan it and post it.

It was called The Blue Maxi and was supposed to be a fast good handling comfortable nice looking 4-seat GT car. They started with 69 Camaro RS SS 350 4 sp with AC and added Corvette brakes 350 LT1 F60-15 tires and American mags. Work was done at the Penske shop. It was a cool article.

John Hooper's 69 Camaro Book has a chapter on that car. Interesting read.

Well, I have found the articles. They are 20yr old photocopies. They are not real clear but they are certainly readable. There are 2 seperate acticles from Car and Driver about the Blue Maxi Camaro.
I also scanned an article from Sports Car Graphic magizine about taking a real Trans-AM Z/28 and putting mufflers on it and driving it as an everyday driver. All of the articles are pretty interesting. I have no way to host them to put them up here. Does anyone want to host them?

Wasn't the C/D Blue Maxi Camaro painted in Sunoco Racing Blue -- same color as the Penske / Donohue cars -- with American Racing 200S cast aluminum wheels? Seems like they had to tweek the front fenders for appropriate tire clearance. Yep. I think I've still got that issue of Car and Driver stashed away somewhere from the old days. Article subhead went "Most stirring object not being tracked by NASA" or something like that.

According to John Hooper's book.

The Blue Maxi started out as a SS/RS and paint code --. The Sunoco Blue paint was appled in Philadelphia at the Penske facilities there. Parts for the car were choosen by Penske and Donahue. Fenders had to be worked to fit the 60 series tires and the ducted hood was modified to feed cold air into the engine all the time, I assume they simply removed the flapper door from inside the hood.

Article claims "the LT1 engine was a stroker 302 converted from a 350". I don't like the way this is worded, I've seen guys throw the stroker term around for destroked engines, which is incorrect, and it appears that this is another case of that. So is it a 302 or a 350? At any rate it had the 69 Z cam, intake, carb. It also had Stahl headers. Car & Driver were not happy with the performance initially so it went back to Penske and was tweaked until they got it to run 13.7 @ 104. It also stopped in 200 feet at .97G, doesn't say what speed they did the braking tests at.

Car had:
American Racing 200 S wheels
12 bolt posi 3.73 rear
JL8 4 wheel discs
4 season air conditioning
Hurst shifter
N44 power steering
ZL2 hood
Console gage and tach package
White houndstooth interior
Tinted glass
Tilt Steering
Woodgrain wheel
Visor mirror
AM/FM stereo
Remote mirror
Front and rear bumper guards

Nicholas Ferrara won the car after 90,000 people submitted entries to the give away. He traded it in for $2000 after only a few months. In 91 Gerald Schmidt is listed as owning the car. He worked at the dealership where Nick traded it in. Car was on the east coast at that time, like others indicate here.
