View Full Version : Winter Project in Full Effect! 4th Gen Seats, Sound Deadening, Headliner, blah blah

I gutted my interior last nite. So I could dry fit the 4th Gen seats to see what needs to be done to make them fit. Front lines up no problem, i'll have to modify the rear like many have done here on the forum. I'll either make a bracket, or cut and weld on the exsisting bracket mounts so they'll line up.

While it's gutted, i'm going to put some sound deadening like Lizard Skin or Fat Mat. Or maybe both, cause my new stereo is making the front doors rattle like a son of b*tch.

New headliner is going in also. So while that's out i'll put some foam type insulation. And I might go with some of those 3 point seat belts you guys are going with.

My Lokar pedals & throttle cable assembly should be arriving soon also.

I've got some trim stuff to order, along with whatever screws i'm missing.

And get my seats recovered! I've got some quotes already. Shouldn't be more than $700 for the front and back seats redone. I'm gonna have the fronts done in black, stock 97-02 pattern, but with red stitching on the outside seem. And the back seat to match the front seat naturally. I think it'll be pretty good lookin! It's gonna be a busy winter!!!!

Thanks for the heads up. I'm gonna order the Lizard Skin tommorrow. Here's some pics of my progress

Here's the seats test fitted. Man those are gonna look good.

Here you see how off the rear brackets are.

It hurts me to see the interior like this. :( Plus no more cruisin until it's done. A small price to pay for a quiet, comfortable ride.

3-point seatbelts are a must-have! Big improvement on the peace-o-mind meter.

Elite--Who did you buy your fatmat from that it took that long?

I put the same seats in my 69. My seats are power. If your are over 6' like myself. You might want to think about seat extenders. There is a person on EBAY that has them for sale for $40.00 I was eating the dash and after I put them in I was able to stretch out my legs. One of the best investment as far as comfort.

Look into Billy's 3pt seat belts at:

Billy posts here occassionally. Do a search for Morris seat belts and you'll find plenty of posts and a few pictures.

I ordered the Fat Mat & Lizard SKin today. We'll see how long it takes for the Fat Mat to arrive. Hopefully not too long.

Does anyone have pics of those 3 point seat belts when they're clipped in? I might have to get these, but then I can't clip them to the center console like the stock seat belts.

For safety they look good. But cosmetically I don't like the way they look. That huge tensioner sticks out too much. I'll stick to the stock belts for now.

I vote for safety--especially when hauling my real treasures around in the Camaro--my wife and kids.

The lap belt is a joke when it comes to keeping your face out of the dashboard during a sudden stop.

I'd hate to have a conversation telling them that the safer seat belts were just too ugly for me to install.

I agree with Brentmc. I have lap belts now, but can't decide between the Morris Classic Concepts ones and 4-point racing belts. Anyone have 4-point harnesses in their daily driver?

No problem! My FatMat should be gettin here soon also, hopefully. I've heard it can take a while for it to arrive, but they said I should have it by this week. I got the Fat Mat Rattle Trap 100 sq ft Kit (http://www.fatmat.com/Rattle%20Trap/Bulk%20Paks/70%20sq%20ft%20bulk%20pak.htm)for $139. :beers:

Are you using both forms of LizardSkin? I see you've got the sound control formula, but what are you doing about the thermal barrier (ceramic insulation) formula? Keep me posted! I'm looking to use the same stuff in my '68 - although without any of the adhesive-backed stuff...

I descided to go with the Sound Control and laying Fat Mat over it. Cause i've got a banging sound system, so I need the extra insulation for the sound quality. It's 80 mils thick, so that and the Lizard Skin should be plenty.

Nice! I don't think my Camaro will haul a system like that, but I'd still like "decent" sound damping. Are you not concerned with the weight of the car? I've read that LizardSkin is pretty heavy stuff. That in combination with the FatMat may be a little too heavy for my tastes...

This car is mostly a cruiser, it won't see any track time or anything like that. So the added weight isn't a big concern. The Fat Mat will add about 25 lbs, and the Lizard Skin i'm not sure. I know the added weight eats up hp and gas mileage. But the stereo will sound clean, and my doors won't rattle apart. And it won't be unbearable to drive in the summer (no a/c).

I've got the interior completely gutted, door panels, kick panels, headliner, etc. I was amazed at the level of dirt and dust built up behind kick panels. And with the headliner out, I could see all the surface rust built up on the roof supports. I spent most of yesterday going at it with a wire wheel, and still have more to grind! And scraping the brown stuff off the roof sucks! I'll be happy once I can start putting it back together.

Twenty five pounds is nothing on a street car. I e-mailed the LizardSkin people and it seems that the SC formula will only reduce noise by about 2 to 3 decibles over the standard ceramic LizardSkin formula. Although I've read that decibles aren't measured linear; so 2 to 3 decibles may very well be a lot. I also didn't ask about vibration reduction qualities of the stuff. I may just decide to add the Fat Mat or Dynamat as I'm building a street cruiser. Twenty five pounds may be worth it...

I used secondskin and a layer of sound proofing foam. Have some pics of the install in my sig below.

Can't wait to get the thing fully back together and see how much of a difference it might make. Did you buy a kit to box your trunk like that or do it yourself? Any write ups on it?

Man your car looks great! You did it the way I should've done mine. I was only 19 when I got the car, and didn't have the money or time to do a frame off. Someday i'll do it, if not this car another.

The trunk was done by a local stereo shop called Digital City in Santa Clara, CA. They do super clean work. It hits hard for just one 12! I've got more pics if you like, see my sig!

I'm pretty much ready to start spraying the Lizard Skin. I had to sand all the surface rust, including the hideous mess that was hiding under the headliner. Now it's all covered in Krylon's Rust Tough Corrosion Preventive Spray Paint. My new cut pile carpet from ACC is on order, along with some other odds and ends for the interior. Before ya know it, i'll be putting it back together. :beers:

Looks good. I ordered fatmat to lay and it took 5 weeks. I would call and the kept telling me they just moved warehouses and it would be out next week. I finally got it though and now need to install.
As for the db thing. Every 3db up or down is either doubling and halfing. So if it reduces by 3db, then you are halfing the sound noise.

I ordered my Fat Mat direct, it took about 2-3 weeks. I got the Rattle Trap Kit w/ 100sqft for $139+shipping. The box was heavy, it said 40lbs on the shipping label! :beers:

Finally had a warm enough day to spray the Lizard Skin. It laid down pretty nicely. I used the "Pro Spray Gun" that Lizard Skin offers. It worked well, except the hose they give you to get into tight places like inside the doors, kick panels, etc. Maybe the air pressure was low, but it didn't spray out the end. It just kinda dripped fat globs out. I have a few more coats to go, to use the whole 2 gal. bucket. Hopefully the weather is good next week so I can finish spraying, and start laying down the Fat Mat. :beers:

And where you see some purple, that's how it looks when it's wet. But dries gray. Lizard skin suggests using between 50-60 psi, I had better results with about 70.

I also got my cut pile carpet from ACC. It looks nice, much better than the original loop style.

One question about the carpet:

Do you remove the console to floor bracket when laying down the carpet? With my old carpet I cut around the bracket and it was a PITA and didn't look very good either. Thanks!

Everything is unmasked and ready for thre Fat Mat. It took about 6-7 thick coats of the Lizard Skin to use up the whole 2 gallons. If anyone is planning on using Lizard Skin, i'll sell you my gun kit. So all you'd have to do is buy the Skin itself. It's lookin good so far, i'm going to lay the Fat Mat down this Thursday & Friday. So next week I can start reassembling the interior, hopefully. :D I still have to modify the brackets on the 4th Gen seats, and have them re-upholstered. But i'm gettin close! :beers:

I can already tell it's gonna help. If I knock on the roof or floor it doesn't sound like a gong anymore. After i'm finished with the inside, i'm gonna spray some rubberized undercoating in the wheel wells. I'm gonna go with 2 layers of Fat Mat over the tunnel and floor pan if I have enough material. Should make it a cool & quiet ride. :beers:

When you get the doors done post some pictures of the fat mat in them. Is the stuff water proof? Project is looking good. Take some pictures of your seat bracket mods also. I have 4th gen seats and a console ready for install after mine is out of paint prison. I am going with the console mount e-brake assy also.

Can you do two layer of fatmat? Will it go down over it's self and stick? 100 SQ FT seems like it should be enough to do the entire car and have some left with no problems.

No problem! I would think it's water proof, since it's foil on top of tar paper. And you can go double thickness, it'll stick to itself no problem. I also thought about adding a 4th Gen console, but I think i'm gonna try to make my own.

How does one hook up the ebrake to the console?
